AIM Server port 443 vs. 5190

Would someone explain to me the value of using AIM Server port 443 over 5190.

MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz with 4Gbytes, Mac OS X (10.5.1), Cox cable, ZyXEL P-330W v1.7, PAP2 v2 for Vonage, G-Drive Q for TM

Hi,

I am not an expert on routing and ports, but there are port ranges below 1024 that get easier through your routers/providers lines than those above 1024 (firewall/filtering).

443 for example is otherwise commonly used for https:
https 443/tcp http protocol over TLS/SSL
https 443/udp http protocol over TLS/SSL
https 443/sctp HTTPS

while 5190 is traditionally "owned" by AOL:
aol 5190/tcp America-Online
aol 5190/udp America-Online

Slightly more.

WE have found here in the various iChat discussions that Zyxels devices in particular do not like port 5190 being used for the TCP login and the UDP file sending and Direct chats (And Buddy List updates)

Most routers that were port forwarded opened port 5190 on both TCP and UDP (In fact any Protocol) and it did not matter.

Nowadays router and modem manufacturers have added the ability to specify Protocols when Forwarding ports.
Historically most Port Forwarding can not be done twice on the same port to different computers.
Unfortunately Forwarding the two protocols tends to require two line s to do so and seems to be seen as Port Forwarding the same port twice.

More recently there is some evidence that the AIM login server on port 5190 is just not coping with the number of AIM clients out there and the Leopard and more recent GoogleTalk addition of the AIM Protocols.

Summary
Your Modem or Router mat not like it.
The port is below the 1024 threshold
The default ports is oversubscribed
Combination of all of these

It will do this if the SSL Login was the default.

If it can not do the SSL Login it will try the normal Login and change the port to whatever that is set to.
To keep to port 443 you have to change both the Non SSL and SSL Login to port 443

(having said that I have seen that change back apparently on it's own as well. But it was several week in between me looking And I could not swear I had not deleted the .plist)
