Preview Application is missing?

I've recently inadvertently lost my preview app. (I think)
I've searched the HD 2 no avail. Now when I download pics or pdf's from email it views them in a lousy colour sync app.
Does anyone know how to get preview application back, or find it and reinstall it as the default?
thanx for taking the time to read this.

Thanx so much for your reply Ali. When searching my HD, below is what I find.
I don't think any of these are the actual Application, so am I then to believe that in order to get preview back I have to reinstall my apple software or purchase Pacifist?
cheers, Aaron

Happy Holidays To You As Well Aaron!

"...in order to get preview back I have to reinstall my apple software or purchase Pacifist?"
Pacifist, is Shareware.

You can try Pacifist first, but I suspect there may be other corruption involved.
Do you have an up-to-date, reliable system backup?

Exactly which model Mac is it?
What is the Processor speed?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What peripherals do you have connected? A keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive or modem, router, etc?

What happened between the last time Preview was present, and now?
Have you made any changes, like upgrading the system, updated or installed any applications or programs, etc?

Have there been any unusual occurences, like freezes, crashes, power outages, etc?

Are you able to startup from the system install disc to run Disk Repair?
Have you run Repair Permissions?
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures?

Hey Ali, so I've downloaded Pacifist and am going to run it after this email. I don't have a system backup. It's a MAc O S 10.3.9 Processor 1.8 GHz Power PC G5, with 512 Ram. (I added 256 Ram about a year ago) so it came with only 256. 80 GB HD. I've got about 37 GB free. The only peripheral is an Ipod (occasionally to let it charge) + keyboard and mouse. I have a room mate who also has a Mac (new version) and recently we've been trying to set up a network 2 no avail. I connect via airport wirelessly. Nothing I can think of has changed between now and last time Preview was present that I can identify. (it's been gone for about a month) The only upgrades I've made besides the 256 ram would be simple software updates than come from Apple. No freezes crashes or power outages. Although sometimes safari or imovie will quit unexpectedly. I do have system install discs but I am not familiar with repair permissions or Disk repair. I shut my computer off every time I am not using it. (it is probably turned off 18 hrs a day). I am not familiar with routine maintenance procedures however would love to learn.
cheers, aaron

aaron,

Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.

Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke

If you turn the PowerBook off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.

These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
I use MacJanitor, when necessary.

INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
At the prompt, type:

sudo periodic daily

Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:

sudo periodic weekly

This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
Repeat again, with command:

sudo periodic monthly

Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:

sudo periodic daily weekly monthly

When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.

Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.

TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)

Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.

When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

And THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

Ali, oh Mac guru, I want to thank you so much for your help.
I have retrieved my Preview app. via pacifist.
I have reviewed the mac maintenance tips and articles and am becoming familiar with them.
I have downloaded Cocktail, and Mac janitor and have run them both successfully. Not to mention disk permissions/repair before and after downloads.
All the best, Aaron
