Jul 17, 2008 10:29 PM in response to Paul Braun1by Paul Braun1,It's obviously a PPC thing. My iPod does not freeze and lock up iTunes on either my MacBook Pro or my intel Mini, but does on both my wife's and my G5. All 4 are running the latest updates.
I wish they'd fix this -- I just bought 6 new cd's that I can't put on myPod. -
Jul 18, 2008 6:34 PM in response to Paul Braun1by sookie08,I've been suffering from the same problem with Itunes freezing up every time I plug in my Ipod ever since I installed the new 7.7 programme, but I've now got it fixed!!.I don't know if this will work for all of you but it has certainly worked for me although it is a little convoluted. I figured that if you could upgrade then you should be able to downgrade so that is what I've done. I downloaded through my utorrent programme a torrent for the old itunes 7.6 and the quicktime that went with it. When this had finished downloading I uninstalled itunes 7.7 then installed the 7.6 version. When I opened it, I got a pop up to tell me that it couldn't open as my Itunes library had been 'upgraded' and it told me what library wouldn't open. I then, just from My Music folder, found this in the Itunes section and deleted it, I was just desperate to get Itunes working again!! Once I'd deleted this I reopened Itunes and it worked but none of my music came up, but that's not a problem as all of my music, vids etc was still in my Itunes portion of My Music file so I just double clicked on the music I wanted back in Itunes and it worked!!!
My Itunes is back working again!!
I've just been offered to upgrade my Itunes to the new 7.7 version, I think they can keep it... Hopes that this helps any of you having the same problems I was, and sorry about the very long winded instructions. If this doesn't help you could try downloading Winamp as this programme will recognise your Ipod.

Jul 19, 2008 6:10 PM in response to Risen Soldierby kilo1079,What about going back to using a "not most recent" version of itunes. Anyone know where to get the previous version? -
Jul 20, 2008 10:01 AM in response to Risen Soldierby kilo1079,YES!! I reverted back to 7.6 and it's working fine. Except the music is no longer on itunes. It's still in the itunes folder though. Just got ver. 7.6 off a torrent site (I used ISO Hunt). -
Jul 21, 2008 9:17 PM in response to kilo1079by Paul Braun1,With over 12,000 songs in my library, along with an assortment of custom playlists that I use at my one job, I'm not willing to start rebuilding all of that, even if I don't need to re-rip 1035 cd's.
I'll just have to wait for Apple to eventually issue a fix. It took almost two months when they screwed up the WPA encryption for MacBook Pro airports last year. Hopefully, this time won't take so long. -
Jul 27, 2008 10:29 PM in response to Risen Soldierby sabrina chappell, same problem here. 80g ipod classic, vista home premium, latest version of itunes because i let it update whenever it asks (stupid me).
ipod freezes on "do not disconnect" screen, and itunes can only be stopped/closed using task manager.
really frustrating as the last thing i was to do before my trip to venezuela tomorrow was transfer all of my new music to my ipod for the plane ride. now what?? -
Jul 28, 2008 9:35 PM in response to Risen Soldierby skinnydale,I'm also having this problem. I'm on a MacBook Pro, and since I downloaded iTunes 7.7 the other week, whenever I attach my 80G iPod, iTunes freezes. The iPod icon shows up on my desktop, but iTunes doesn't register it. I've restarted and redone everything possible.
Mac: HELP! -
Jul 31, 2008 2:56 PM in response to skinnydaleby Paul Braun1,Apple just pushed an iTunes update this morning. I'm bringing the iPod home tonight to see if they fixed it. Will report back after I try. -
Jul 31, 2008 6:48 PM in response to Paul Braun1by Paul Braun1,YESSSSS!!!!! This morning's iTunes update did the trick. My 60GB photoPod is once again on speaking terms with iTunes.
Thank you, Apple. -
Aug 16, 2008 8:14 AM in response to Risen Soldierby 858Smith,is anyone having these problems again? i am so mad! i've tried every suggestion in this thread, plus other sites, and no luck. -
-
Oct 6, 2008 2:05 PM in response to 858Smithby LegalBoozer,I have been using an 2004 512mb iPod shuffle up until now, but as my library has expanded and diversified have have found an increasing need to aquire a more spacious iPod.
My lovely G/F has recently unearthered and given me her old 4th Gen. iPod Photo/Colour Display as an intermediary before I decide which new iPod to buy.
Howvere I seem to be having a similar issue that has been mentioned here through out. I am running off an laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and the latest version of iTunes (8.0.1.11) but the iPod Colour (circa late 2004) freezes iTunes and doesn't display in it. But windows recognises it as being connected and the drivers installed and up-to-date.
Whenever I try to access the iPod through Windows though, it crashes my whold PC. I have followed al the 5 R's instructions and I, like others, am reluctant to revert to a previous version of iTunes and lose playlists, etc.
Does anyone know of a solution to this??? -
Oct 21, 2008 11:39 AM in response to Risen Soldierby garycolin,I've having the exact same issue with my Nano! Has anyone found a solution yet?? -
Oct 21, 2008 4:12 PM in response to garycolinby nightalon,I'm asking myself, is it worth reinstalling Windows? I do have all my stuff backed up...I'm wondering what could be the cause. I have SP1 and all the latest updates...Windows Media Center Add-Ons? I'm not using MacDrive... Hamachi and Remote Desktop Connection?
Thus far I've tried restoring my iPod with no luck...on Macs as well. I also booted it in disk mode and formatted FAT32, but that didn't help the problem. It's just this computer and no others that have trouble hooking up to it. It's top-of-the-line hardware, so that can't be the issue...help me, Apple! Make me want to switch to MacOS by proving you can fix my problem! (Not by telling me I have to get a Mac to fix my problem....) -
Nov 3, 2008 2:01 PM in response to Risen Soldierby Mashbash,I'm having this same problem, have been ever since about August of this year. One day I connected the Video iPod 30Gb to the computer and then, when I ejected it, all the songs were gone. When reconnecting iTunes continues playing the current song then stops, and freezes. iPod looks normal on screen, with "Do Not Disconnect" message.
A solution would be appreciated, I've done everything from reformatting to safe mode to who knows what else. I can't afford to buy a new iPod and don't see why I should have to if this is a software problem.
