Help. Connecting Slingbox to Apple Airport ExtremeG wired to AEBSn to Cable

Ok guys I need your expertise here. To make a long story short this is what i have.

Cable modem to Apple Extreme N- and to Apple Extreme G through gigabit port. What i want to do is hookup the Slingbox Tuner to the Apple Extreme G through the single ethernet port.

How do i setup the routing and forwarding and on which device?

Anyone have a similar setup... In case your wondering its to keep Wireless N and legacy B/G seperate

Again Cable Modem--> ExtremeN- gigabit to - ExtremeG <--Slingox

Thanks

I just download the software for the round base station and i see a section in the Admin Utility WDS tab that say Relay or Remote! Which one do i set it to? and is WDS the same as a Bridge?

Why does apple make it so hard to update software.. the firmware on this is 5.7 Where do i go to get the latest Firmware and Windows Software. i spent a day searching on the apple downloads and didn't find anything for the round AEBS only the express and Extreme N

Thanks

Also you mentioned to turn this into a Bridge, However i need the Round station to distribute IP's to B/G clients so how would i set it up so they are both on the same network and they are both distributing IP's ... the AEBSn is only for N clients and Round is for B/G and both need to distribute IP's and be on the same network..

I understand they need to be bridged so they are on the same network but if i disable DHCP on the Round the how will it kick Ips to the B/G networks?

You don't want WDS. That is used for wirelessly connecting base stations. It is not applicable when you are connecting them via Ethernet.

In "AirPort Admin Utility", to configure the AEBS as a bridge you would disable the option to distribute IP addresses.

That is the latest firmware for that base station.

Why do you need that? In the dual band network you reference all the older AEBS is configured as a bridge. All of the clients (802.11n, 802.11b/g, and Ethernet) get IP addresses from the 802.11n AEBS.

...but im hooking up the AEBSn to the Wan port will this work?

Do you mean that you are connecting the internet to the round AEBS's WAN port? If that is the case then you want to operate the 802.11n AEBS as a bridge... not the round AEBS.

Ok no WDS got that.

I was under the impression since there are 2 separate routers each need to distribute the IPs with DHCP but i guess im wrong only one NAT router needs to be set for DHCP.

Actually im going to be hooking it up exactly like the picture above... if hookup the Cable from the AEBSn to the Round base stations WAN this will work i assume correct?

thanks

Ok Thanks.

One more question about future expansion of my wifi network. I know from reading WDS drops the connection speeds to about half. So if i were to buy another AEBSn or AEBSg. I'm not so much concerned about the Range of N as im B/G so i may buy another AEBSg so i can extend the range using WDS since the ethernet cable connection is not an option. Would doing this decrease the B/G and N clients to 50% of the speeds or just the B/G clients if only the WDS was setup for the AEBSg...

Any suggestions to increase the range without using WDS? thanks

Duane thanks for your helps i got it working but i have one more set of questions. I asked this in another thread but im going to post it here too since your following this thread...

One more question. I got the AEBSn and set it up and it seems to be working just fine now. I setup the AEBSg and slingbox with a static IP and i setup the DHCP from 192.168.1.2 - .10

My question is when you guys say your DHCP starts at .X how is that possible? i setup the 2 devices with Static IP's using their MAC. but when i was in the DHCP tab i could not set the starting address of the DHCP to 192.168.1.10 - 20 ... The last octect the .10 would not configure i guess it needs to be set for the whole range including the static IP's as well that is why i set it to 192.168.1.2 - .10

Also for the USB disk i can add to this router. I have read the manual but i don't believe this is possible like Linksys and other routers. Can i setup the USB disk to be accessed through the net by setting up an FTP address to the disk? Basically i would like to be able to access the USB drive anywhere in the world granted i have the IP address?

Thanks again

Duane im using PC’s to connect to this router no Macs. So I was hoping you may be able to give me some tips. Do you know what USB drives are compatible? I would prefer using a 500 or 750 gig Western Digital My book drive b/c of the power management features so when the disk is not in use after 10 mins it goes into idle and saves power. However im not sure if it is compatible with this router.

Also I have read the disk needs to be formatted to Fat32 if its being used by mac and pc but since im only using it on PC’s can I format it using NTFS?

Thanks

None of that is applicable when you are using a file server like the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The file server provides the information to the clients in a format which is NOT related to the low level formatting of the drive. Therefore the format of the drive is not relevant to the clients.

The AEBS is compatible with drives formatted HFS+, FAT32, or FAT16. The best performance seems to be achieved when the drive is formatted HFS+.
