Macbook Pro won't recognize windows vista dvd

Hi everyone,

I just bought Leopard and a new copy of Windows Vista Home Premium to install on my Macbook Pro. Leopard installed fine. Had some issues partitioning (had to get the right size b/c of unmovable files). Anyway, i made a 27gb partition to install my Vista. However, when I put my install dvd into the drive, it spins, makes a funny noise, then asks for the install dvd. After it spins the dvd some more, it spits it out. It doesn't seem to recognize the install dvd. I've put the Vista dvd into my PC and it runs fine. I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thank you.

here's the crazy thing. my macbook recognizes a 64 bit vista home premium dvd, but it obviously won't install since it's not a 64 bit processor. so on a hunch, i tried installing an old copy of windows xp home sp1a. and it worked perfectly. haven't tried updating it or loading drivers since i'm guess that won't work since it's not sp2. i did this with the thought of installing vista after installing xp. still the computer doesn't recognize the dvd. i'm guessing i have a bad install dvd, which i find hard to believe. i'll be calling microsoft on monday to get a replacement dvd. any thoughts?

I have exactly the same issue as you with mac not recognising the Vista Home Premium DVD either in Bootcamp or in the Finder. The applecare people were completely clueless and the guys at the "Genius" bar in the apple store were less than impressive and were insisting that it was a faulty DVD. Since i had tested it on various PCs and it worked fine, i knew it wasn't that. After 30 minutes of arguing they finally agreed to replace my DVD drive which unfortunately didn't help either. I have now ordered alternative media from Microsoft in the form of CDs for the cost of postage and will try that when they arrive and let you know. This is a problem that i'm seeing in various forums all over the place and is clearly some bizzare issue with Mac software or hardware which Apple refuses to acknowledge exists. P.S, don't bother re-creating the DVD as i tried copying the image to a USB drive on a PC and then burning it onto a blank DVD via the Mac. Although this allows the finder to mount the new DVD, Bootcamp still won't recognise the disc as a valid installer disc. More soon...

Mr Pappageorgiou,

I have the exact same issue. I have tried many times to install from the Vista Home Premium retail DVD and I keep getting an error during install (extracting files). The error is 0x80070017. It looks like I might have a bad disc too. I also did the same thing and burned another disc, but Bootcamp wouldn't recognize that one. I am going to call Microsoft today to see if they can help today, so I will let you know. Also, let me know if you are able to solve the issue.

Thanks.

Hi, I finally got the CD replacements [you can order via www.windowsvista.com/1033/ordermedia]and tried to install via Bootcamp. The good news is the CD's were bootable and worked. The bad news is that there is no easy way to install the required drivers to use the eject key on the mac keyboard, so when you are asked to install disc 2 during the Vista install process, you can't eject the disc and proceed. Ultimately i gave up on Bootcamp, removed it and used VMware Fusion which i think is infinately better and all is now working like a dream. I would reccomend you just get a replacement DVD from Microsoft and that should be easier if you want to use Bootcamp or look at VMware Fusion (although you still need new media). Good luck!

I have the exact same problem. i purchased msdn version of vista business which I burned on my imac. I installed vista on bootcamp without issue. I decided I was tired of rebooting it to play windows games as I use the imac as an iTunes server and wanted to move my bootcamp to my mac book pro. The mbp will not recognize the disc and treats it as a blank dvd. The disc is recognized in two imacs and a windows laptop. I can burn a new disc from it that is recognized but will not complete install due to incomplete files. This cannot be a bad disk and it ony has the problem on my mbp. I installed it on a second imac just to test it and it works. Hardware info - Hardware Overview:
