Insufficient Privileges
I run some university Mac labs comprised of various models of Apple machines (G5s, iMac G5s, Mirrored Door G4s & QuickSilver G4s). All of the new stuff we just purchased over summer is running Tiger (updated with everything but perhaps the latest Security Update 2005-007). The older equipment is still running what we purchased for it last year, Panther (again, updated fully except for that latest Security Update). Students using all of these machines connect to any of the 4 Mac file servers we have. One server is running Jaguar Server the other three are Panther Servers (updated similarly to the clients). There are two local admin accounts on the clients. The students in the labs login with a non-admin local account "students". They similarly connect to the servers with "students". The accounts and related uids/gids are consistent from client to server. The server sharepoints that the students routinely connect to have the following permissions Admin User-RW/Admin Group-RW/Everyone-RW.
On Tiger clients, when students login and then connect to a server (both as "students") they can't copy folders over to or create folders on the servers. They get the following message . . . "The operation cannot be completed because you did not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." They can copy files or groups of files over just fine though. On Panther clients, files and folders both work fine. Also, if an admin user logs in on the Tiger client and then connects to the server as "students", they can work with files and folders equally fine.
I tried repairing permissions on both clients and servers. That didn't change anything. I checked owners and groups of folders that were being copied, they're all correct. I thought maybe it was something wrong with the local "students" home folder, so I deleted it and re ditto'd it from the system template. That didn't help. I took one machine, re formatted the HD and installed just Tiger. I updated Tiger to the point of the other machines with Software Update, repaired disk permissions, created the "students" account and made no other preference adjustments other than what the system makes upon user login. The folder problem still occurred. This made me suspect that it's maybe a server side issue, however, it still seems odd that the same process with the Panther clients works fine.
I scoured helpful websites like macfixitforums and others for similar problems and solutions. Apparently I'm the only
one experiencing this issue.
I contacted our regional Apple K-20 Systems Engineer and he was stumped. The only thing he could think of was that perhaps a .DS_Store file with incorrect permissions was being created inside the to-be-copied folders. From the command line though, there were no .DS_Store files there. He's still trying to help, but is extremely busy. As the fall semester just began, this is a problem that needs an answer ASAP.
I would like to find a solution other than spending $2000 to update all four servers to Tiger Server. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone else offer possible solutions? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
