Problems Installing Tiger Server From DVD

I'm having a problem installing OS X 10.4 Tiger Server on my new Xserve. 10.3 server came pre-installed but I would like to use 10.4 server install disks that came in the same box as the xserve.

Whenever I try to boot from the 10.4 server DVD the xserve shuts down before the installer opens. I have watched it boot using verbose logging mode as it boots up, I get to a blue screen and a spinning pinwheel, then I don't get any errors and it dose not seem to crash, the system goes through the proper shut down procedure.

I have tried installing using the Remote Server assistant and installing though my powerbook via firewire disk mode. No luck. I also tried booting my G5 tower from the disk. Same problem.

When I insert the disk into my G5 tower the disk mounts on the desktop fine.

Am I missing something Here?

Update:
I found the 10.4 server install disks on 3 CDs in the Xserve accessories box with all the other disks. Gave the CDs a shot and every thing runs as it should until I get to disk 2. "BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad format" as it is installing Japanese files.

hmm....
this is making me mad, one bad disk I can understand but two?
Run the installer again with Japanese disabled in the custom install options. I figure I can run the Japanese install package latter.

things seem to have installed alright now.

found the same problem..

the dvd will not get to the installer... just shuts down the system before it gets to the installer.

the cd's get to the installer but I get an error on CD 2 and it says install failed, try again. Hit OK and it tries again. and fails again. I removed all the languages and printer drivers to minimize install and it went fine from there.

would be nice if these bad disks could be replaced by apple.

I have the same error with the CDs and DVDs that came with a new Xserve. These discs are labeled as CPU Drop in CD or CPU Drop in DVD. The install discs that came with a maintenance agreement for a 1 month old Xserve work just fine. These discs are labeled Install CD or Install DVD.

Any ideas what the difference is?

Also, the serial number that came with the brand new Xserve will not work. I've retyped it a hundred times, to no avail. The one from the maintenance agreement works fine, but you have to have unique s/n's on the network. Darn.

I am having the same problems. I called Apple
and they explained that the original batch of
OS 10.4 Tiger Server shipped with incorrect
serial numbers which do not work.

I was emailed a replacement on which did work.

I have also discovered that I cannot boot from the
DVD CPU drop in disc because it will shut the server
down during boot.

I had never noticed this before since I was installing
from CD media and I always customize removing unneeded
items such as the additional languages.

I had the same problem with the maintenance agreement disks. I let them sit for awhile and after I was assured some of our other server process were up to 10.4 (Cumulus and FontReserve) I began what I thought would be a simple upgrade.
I had to rebuild to 10.3 and I am currently awaiting disks from Apple. Two questions: 1) why do I need to wait a week for these "new" disks 2) How many other maintenance agreement members have had similar problems?
