Your function keys may have been switched from primary to secondary use, the quickest way to figure out if this is the case is to hold down the function key while you press F4 and F5.
In the meantime, if you haven't done so already, control the sound by using the menu bar panel (System Preferences -> Sound -> Check "Show Volume in Menu Bar").
I found that if i click on Fn+ function key it works,
i also discovered that its not only my F4 F5 that arent working on their own, also F1,F2 & f3
now we know i have to have to click on combined Fn+function key
but how do i restore the old default system.? ( i clicked on restore default, nothing happened)

The same thing happened to me, except I'm running 10.4.11. I just installed a Java update and a security update last night, though, so I suspect that has something to do with it.
go to system preferences then click keyboard and mouse. next go to the keyboard settings and click on the check box that says use all f1, f2 keys etc. as standard function keys and it will work. it happened to me out of nowwhere but i immediately fixed it.
Your welcome
Hey folks, I just installed some stuff (I forget what it was) from the software updater and now my volume keys aren't working no matter waht I do, I've tried fn+volume and just volume without fn......nothing works....any pointers?
1. Click on System Preferences
2. Click on Keyboard and Mouse
3. Click on Keyboard tab
4. Uncheck "Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function... Blah blah blah."
and all of your F buttons should work like they did in the beginning
