printing problems to 4 x 6

mac newbie starting to use iphoto.

trying to print a 4 x 6 photo

picked photo, cropped to desired size, hit print button

when i pick the 4 x 6 borderless size, iphoto auto crops and only selects a portion of my photo ie i can only see half my original photo

i tried to customize and option click to fit to page or use the zoom bar. nothing gets the picture small enough and only one half of my son's head is showing up. he's not as cute with half of his head missing.

if i pick 8 x 10 then everything fits but as soon as i try 4 x 6 its like i am getting a 4x 6 window of an 8 x 10 print. i don't want an 8 x 10 photo.

help! is there an easy fix? why is this so hard?

imac, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

try doing it this way

Revert to the original photo - crop the photo to 4x6

Select the photo you want to print, click "print" - on the resulting window select the printer, the paper size and the print size (4x6 in this case) - click print and select any printer specific features you want and print - you should get just what you want

I am having a similar problem with my HP C5180 trying to print 4X6 borderless. My printer will not go to the photopaper 4X6 paper tray. The printer continues to think that it is to print a 4 X 6 image on regular paper. I have selected everything correctly but no go. I downloaded the latest from HP and if I use their Photo Printer software and print from there, it works but prints the image a little off to one side. If I just print to the 4X6 photo paper using the internal image and not acess it from my mac it will print just fine. This driver and software are still beta from HP. Anyone else?

I am having the same problem with both 5 by 7 and 4 by 6 printing. I tried using the crop feature both while printing and on a copy of my photo in iPhoto. In both cases I was unable to get the complete photo on the print - over half the photo was cropped away!! I also noticed that if I use the customize button while printing, a zoom slider shows up but I am unable to "zoom out" any more to try and get the photo to fit on either 5 by 7 or 4 by 6 sizes.

So, it seems iPhoto will not let the resolution be less than a certain value in terms of dots per inch. So if your camera is a six megapixel like mine, it appears that you can only get the full picture to print on 8 by 10. I am going to test this by taking a picture down in resolution and then trying to print.

This seems like such a basic thing, I am surprised it has not been addressed by Apple. I don't want to have always print on 8 by 10 paper (expensive in terms of ink and paper) and down sampling the resolution (if that works) every time I want to print would be a real pain. Come on Apple the Mac is supposed to be easy to use - live up to your Mac vs. PC commercials.

Well apparently the problem is just that iPhoto was confused. I tried down sampling a picture via exporting to a small PNG file (from 3008 by 2000 down to 320 by 213) and then imported the PNG file back into iPhoto. That printed fine - I got the whole photo on to a 4 by 6 sheet. I then tried again to print a 3008 by 2000 image and this time IT WORKED JUST FINE. The only thing I can figure is that after selecting a paper size one needs to Quit iPhoto and then Launch iPhoto again to clear up its confusion. That is the only think I can figure happened to clear up this problem. I am guessing that this is some sort of bug in iPhoto???

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. After cropping to 5 x 6 or 4x6 and hitting the Print button are you selecting Paper size -5x7; Print size = borderless in the next window? What do you see in the preview window when you do?

If you're finding a *very small* amount of cropping occurring then click on the Customize button and in the next window Control-click on the image and select Fit Photo to Frame option. That may bring in slightly more of the image but you'll have to look closely to see the difference.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Ever since Apple updated 10.4.11 in Dec.2007, I have lost my ability to print any 4x6,5x7,8x10 borderless prints and paper. I use an Epson R800 photo printer. When I try and print any of the borderless photos, it does not start printing at the edge, but feeds the paper approx. 3/4" first and then starts printing. Hence, I lose part of my photo. These photos have been pre cropped in iPhoto 6.06 and I did not have any problems until the last software update. Regular printing is fine using standard 8.5x11 paper or photo paper( if I do not choose borderless). I spent two hours on the phone with an Epson Tech (FREE...Printer out of warranty)! We tested the hardware of the printer without it hooked to my iMac. We dumped all Printer drivers and software by uninstalling and using spotlight for missed files. We trashed drivers from other printer brands as well. This latest printer drivers are rated up to 10.3.2 OSX, but I was told by Epson that it should work fine with 10.4.10 It did work fine until 10.4.11 came out! Epson told me to check with Apple to see if they change anything to iPhoto in the lasted upgrade. I don't want to buy iLife 08 to see if my $400 printer is going to work with it. Anyone have any similar problems after the last upgrade? Please post any help or suggestions. Thanks. PS...I hooked the printer to my eMac, also with 10.4.11, and it does the same thing.

dcm1987:

There are some preference files that may be relevant that reside in the User/Library/Preferences/ByHost folder such as com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.0016cb3791b6 (your number at the end will be different). Check to see if there are any printer pref files in there an delete them. See if that will do the trick.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I found the files you said and delete them. No change in my borderless printing. I did however, use another photo site, Kodak Easy Share, to try and print a 4x6 borderless photo. I thought if I was not using iPhoto, this would eliminate any Apple software problems. Same result with the 3/4" pre-fed before printing. I now believe my only option is to try and use a (gasp) PC laptop, download the Epson drivers, and see if it is status quo. That should leave no doubt that this is a printer problem and not any Apple or PC software glitch. I can still print my 4x6, 5x7, & 8x10 photos with borders. It's just frustrating and coincidental that this occurred during the 10.4.11 upgrade time period. I had enough problems with Safari 3, as did a lot of people. Took about 10 days to resolve and then Apple sent out 3 so called security updates to fix QT and Flash Player problems. Thanks again and I 'll be checking back for further suggestions. Dean
