Cannot run sheepshaver in leopard

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone has any experience with Sheepshaver?

I've just recently this year converted to the mac, and feel I've missed out of 20 years of Macintosh pre OS X operating systems. I'm trying to install OS9 with sheepshaver, however under leopard i find sheepshaver to be unresponsive, and just crashes when I open the application.

Does anyone know of sheepshaver having issues with Leopard?

Merry Christmas everyone,

Seb

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.1), 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb Ram, 80gb hard drive

I don't know about Sheepshaver but OS 9 will not run with Leopard...
If Sheepshaver needs OS 9, then I think you are out of luck unless there is a new version for OS X

Hey, thanks for all your responses.

I got it working in the end. I had to download a Mac OS "New World" rom, and then managed to install and run OS 8.5 in leopard. It doesn't run smoothly though - a few months back I purchased an iMac G3, tray loading, I think it was 200mhz, or 266mhz...it had OS 8.6 on it, and it ran sooo so well, however i got rid of it after a week or two as it stopped working quite soon after i set it up. Anyway, on my intel MacBook it doesn't run well at all, so I'm trying to tweak sheepshaver, however there's little I can do I feel...I'll just have to accept i started using the Mac in an era when OS 8/9 just don't exist and aren't appropriate anymore... sigh

Merry christmas y'all!

I think the choice of ROM can make a big difference.

I still have a G3 tray loader (although the CRT is toast so it doesn't get used anymore), and the ROM from that one works better with 8.5 in Leopard than the ones commonly linked for download re: SheepShaver. With the downloaded ones, crashes were not uncommon, and the effects seem to bleed out into OS X, causing instability. With the iMac ROM, OS 8.5 is remarkably stable on my system - and fast. When the old Mac would crash, rebooting would take a couple of minutes, but on the rare occasions when SheepShaver does crash, a "reboot" takes seconds.

I would have preferred that Apple maintained Classic support for Leopard (and I honestly wouldn't have expected them to beyond that), but SheepShaver will probably be good enough to let me continue to access some of my old files. It is a remakable piece of software.

Anyway, try the iMac's ROM if you still have the disks.

Unfortunately I don't have the original install disks for the iMac i used to have. When i purchased it, it came with no CDs, so i had to purchase an OS 8.5 Install CD from an american website and had it sent over to me - it's not a hardware dependent Disk, just the main retail one. Will this contain the ROM on it?

Much thanks & Merry Christmas,

Seb

I never had a retail 8.5 disk, but I inherited a beige G3 with 8.5.0 and the ROM from that (v1.1.2, 1.8 MB) did not work according to my notes (segv error, whatever that is). But my iMac came with 8.5.1 and that ROM was different (v.1.2.1, 3.3 MB). That might be the same as this one.

Anyway, on your CD, try looking inside the CD's "System Folder", or else on the installed 8.5 on your SheepShaver image, see if one was installed in there.

I suppose it's possible that different combinations work differently on different systems, so you might still have to test out various combinations.
