iPod repeatedly connects and disconnects to computer

Problem: When I plug the iPod into my computer, the iPod switches from Connected to Do Not Disconnect every few seconds. The computer keeps detecting a device and then losing it. The USB noise goes on and off and on... This means that I cannot even click on the iPod in windows explorer before it disappears again. I assume this must be a problem with Windows Vista compatibility.

The problem remains no matter which USB port I use.

My computer is able to read and write to normal usb drives.

I tested the iPod on a Windows XP machine and it works perfectly. The problem is I need it to work on my computer.

Please, I would appreciate any suggestions.

It's not Vista, it's the ipod. I have a 3G nano and it does the same cycle connect disconnect that has been described on many threads here. I've formatted to Windows using Windows XP Pro, and then reformateed to Mac on my iMac with both Tiger, and now Leopard (and back to Windows again). It makes no difference. Sometimes it works fine, other times it goes into that endless loop of connect disconnect. Apple must acknowledge that there is a problem and issue a fix!!!

I was given my iPod from a friend that got a new one, & I have the same problem. I did the 5 R's & ended up erasing all the data that was previously on it, not to mention unable to even update it. When it does connect it will recognize other folders on my iPod, but NO MUSIC FILES OR FOLDERS!!! I now have it pluged directly into PC & I've tried all USB ports available and still nothing! I'm pulling my frekin' hair out!!!!

Could there be an "Installation Disk"? Do iPods originally come w/ one?

And why doesn't the owners manual (features guide?) not show when I try to view it? It just showes a blank page.

I'm open for any suggestions!!! :}

I have the same problem, but with a twist.

- Recieved the nano for christmas. Connects & charges fine to my front usb ports.
- After moving back, ipod begins connecting an reconnecting.
- Reset Ipod and reinstalled itunes etc to no avail.
- tried nano in BACK usb port, and will connect, but it WON'T CHARGE!!!

So I can transfer any files I want, but it's dieing because I can't charge it. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Exact same problem and I've been missing sleep over it for a few days now.

well I've decided to spend my weekend formatting my c drive and completely reinstaling my computer from scratch, I don't really expect this to work as its uptodate and not particularly in need, but I can't repare as my windows is SP1 and I've upgraded to SP2 so can only remove the current OS, reinstall SP1 and update it all over again, in fact its going to really **** me off if it don't work because I have so much to reinstall

this is the first time I've bought apple and might be the last time, I really regret having bought 2 before trying one out first
