What does the little phone/keyboard icon next to the battery mean?

What does the little phone/keyboard icon next to the battery mean?

We can't find it in the documentation anywhere, but we are seeing this little icon that looks like a phone handset over a bunch of squares (a keyboard?). Anyone know what it means? Thanks!

powerbook, Mac OS X (10.4)

that is the TTY for hearing impaired setting, you can turn that off in Settings>Phone>TTY

...and talking about it.... is it related t the volume while speaking whit the headphones? i mean... when i make/receive a call and answer whit the TTY i can barelly hear what other say and they cant hear me eighter....

THX if some1 can solve my problem.

When in TTY mode, the earphone jack is also usable with the TTY adapter to connect a TTY device. It is possible the earphone jack having to work in dual modes might interfere with your volume when TTY is turned on.
