Parental controls for wireless internet use?

There are no parental controls. Tell Apple to add them

however some routers allow restrictions to sites but they have to be the direct site not a category

Not sure how technical you are, but you could set the restrictions through your router.

Go through your routers online web page, and only allow signals that have a specific MAC address.

meaning, set your laptops MAC addresses into the allowed list, and then voila' he can't access the internet... at all. (which means that he can't buy music wirelessly from the iTunes store also, but that's just a small sacrifice.

And keep in mind that that only stops him from using the internet at home... he can go to starbucks and get on whatever he wants.

I've already requested Parental Controls at least 3 times.

Honestly, I would not give a Touch to someone too young to manage their own internet life.
1) It's very expensive.
2) It's delicate - for a kid especially.
3) Don't rely upon a company to do your parenting 🙂

I'm pretty there are things just as expensive and delicate for a kid to want that age (Xbox 360, PS3)

My router lets me specify sites allowed. The only problem is the ITunes store and YouTube buttons won't work. I have called Apple and asked what sites need to be allowed for these buttons to work. This will still allow for "limits" for web browsing AND allow for access to ITunes and YouTube.

I'll pass on if I find out the needed sites.

As a parent of 3 boys I can say that parental controls is no small issue.

A relatively simple thing you can do is set up an account (free) with OpenDNS.
See: http://opendns.com/ Once the account is set up you can specify what content should be block and what should not be blocked.

Then set the DNS servers on your iPod Touch to the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). See: http://andrewescobar.com/archive/2007/07/06/change-iphones-wi-fi-dns-settings-to -connect-to-the-internet/

Alternatively, you can set up your home router to use the OpenDNS servers and protect every computer in your home.

Note: neither of this solutions protect your son when he uses an open network OUTSIDE of your home for internet access.

I heard that Parental controls are coming out with 2.0 in june.

I don't know how old your son is, or how bright he is, but there's actually a really easy way to get around your plan. If he changes the date back a week, then surfs to his content, then clears the history and switches the date back to the current date, you would be none-the-wiser.

It would probably be better to check his history at random times, just in case he figures this work around out.
