BOOT CAMP XP error: Installation Failure D:\I386\asms Incorrect Function

Right then, got boot camp partition sorted. Installing Windows XP Pro gets as far as Configuring XP options page and then errors out with this message:

Installation Failure D:\I386\asms Incorrect Function

any ideas. My PC guru thinks it may be having problems identifying / reading the CD drive so the installation cannot continue.

The Mac it's being put on is an iMac Intel Core Duo 1.83ghz 512mb RAM (Combi Drive)

Incidentally It worked fine with Vista previously, but Vista is rubbish and my friend with the Mac could not use his software. Hence going back to XP. Prior to putting XP on the Mac (well trying!!!!) we did a flatten and clean install of Leopard before using Boot Camp

The disc is clean and brand new, I have two - both don't work. (It installs fine on a PC). It's a Microsoft Windows Development Group CDr, The only 'pressed' Cd I have is XP without Service Pack 2 (that's on another disc) so I can't use it. I search google for the answer and it comes up with loads of PC users who have experienced the problem, it talks about drivers for the CD drive not being installed. I don't understand this though because the imac boot camp partition works right up to the point of configuring windows. I have seen nothing on the Apple forum about this problem at all.
