Before I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, Safari would insert www. and .com at the ends of anything I put in the address bar. It doesn't do that anymore and I have to type in the www. and the .com. Is this a bug? I'm sure it must be known but I found nothing about it by searching the forums. Thank you for your help.
Macbook Pro 15", 2.16GhZ, 3GB DDR2 SDRAM,
Mac OS X (10.5.1)
I have found the exact same thing happening to me. Does anyone else know if this was a planned move by apple? Or do me an Ian have some sort of a bug????
If you have visited the site before, it should work as you described.
However, it should not assume
"com" as a suffix as there are (I suspect you know), many different top level domain names, and the system should
NOT , therefore, assume com.
I had this problem as well and opened another thread (but can't find that one now). After reading a similar thread I found a solution that worked for me. I don't quite know when or how this changed and caused the problem, but the solution did work.
Change your DNS settings using OpenDNS.
Go to www.opendns.com and click Get Started. Follow the directions depending on whether you want to change the DNS on your computer or router (more likely) and what type of router you use. I have an Airport and the directions were decent (not updated for Leopard but easy to follow nonetheless).
Like I said, I don't know how this problem originated (it started for me using a new Macbook -- didn't have this problem with a MacBook Pro G4) and I don't recall resetting the Airport or making changes to the DNS. But it worked and there seem to be some advantages to using OpenDNS. We'll see. I've heard from others that some commonly visited sites became unavailable using OpenDNS but I'll try it out for a while.
