unknown error occurred (0xE8000001)

Every time I start itunes I get this error.

"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000001)"

I just got an iTouch for Christmas and for some reason I cannot get it to work on my computer. I've tried my friends nano on my computer, and it worked just fine. The nano didn't have any errors, and it was very simple to get started. Then I tried hooking the Itouch that I got to friends computer, and it worked just fine. I didn't have any hassle getting it to work. I tried the itouch on another computer, and once again I didn't have any problems. I thought that it may have been defective, but it doesn't seem to be have problems on other computers. It is just on mine.

I tried doing the run dianostics and did the ipod connectivity test. Everything was green except the "Ipod found." Did the help button that was next to it and tried everything it said.

I have Service Pack 2, and 2.0 usb. Here is some info from the connectivity test.

I was having the same problem with my iPod Touch and my XP machine. I'd plug in my ipod touch and get the error message, and I'd be forced to "restore" it, after a while itunes wouldn't recognize it no matter what I did. After having to reset and restore the ipod (which clears the disk) a few times. I found another way to get it going. The problem was with itunes and not the ipod. I opened up the Task Manager and found that while the itunes application was closed it was still running in the processes, if I closed it there then it would recognize the touch again. Once I had it back up, I turned off the "Open iTunes When This iPod Is Connected" option and haven't had a problem since. Also, always be sure to properly eject the touch through iTunes before unplugging it, as that might create the same problem.

I had this problem too with my iPod touch! And did all tht stuff like trying it on some of my mates computers where it worked fine and every update and reinstall under the sun i could find! (I know i have a mac computer but the problem seems identical to that on windows).
I solved the problem using a different cable though, my computer supports USB 2.0 but the cable i had for it I'm not sure did (It worked fine for a while and then stopped altogether) and it recognises it again now:] Have u tried using a different cable with it? It sounds reali mundane but i hope it helps...

I'm having the same error when connecting the ipod touch to my wife's windows xp machine. The ipod connects and syncs just fine with my powerbook G4. Also my wife's ipod shuffle still works just fine on the windows xp machine. I have tried everythining short of reformatting windows. I have reinstalled itunes, the mobile device support, checked for bad registry keys, cleared the temp directory. Nothing is working. Anyone have any ideas?

I solved this problem on my windows xp machine. Hopefully this will work for others. All the posts and info i could find about the 0xE8000001 error seem to in some way tied to USB vs. USB2.0. USB 2.0 is required. Some people have problems with none USB 2.0 hubs. So make sure if your using a hub it is USB 2.0. Also make sure your machine has USB 2.0 ports.

If neither of these solve the problem last thing to do is update your USB drivers and make sure there USB2.0 drivers and up to date. I found an article in the Microsoft help database that said service pack 2 did not always update the drivers like it was supposed to.

To update the drivers. Right click "My Computer" and select properties. Then select the hardware tab and choose "Device Manager". Go to the bottom where it says Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Look for anything that says "Host controller" some where in it's name. Some will say Things like "PCI to USB host bridge" Some will say things like "Intel USB host controller ". To everyone of these you will want to right click and select "Update Driver...". Select Yes, this time only for the on the first screen and hit next. Then select Install the software automatically hit next. It should then find the drivers and update them for you. Remember to repeat this on all things that say host controller. You can try it on just about anything that says USB but the host controllers should be all you need.

Also a small warning. If you are using a USB keyboard and mouse when you do this they may stop working. You'll just need to restart and they'll start working again.
