POP user name not recognised.

I'm moving our mail services from AppleShare IP to a Xserve running 10.4.2. I had done some tests about a year ago on 10.3.x and then everything worked.

But on the new box I'm getting:
"The server error encountered was: POP user name "hjgunn" unrecognized."

As well as for any other user defined on the box.

Any ideas on what I may have forgotten.

And yes the mail server is turned on and mailservices are enabled for all the users defined on the box.

TIA

Hans

1. Do you have a firewall enabled?

2. In server admin/mail/overview - Does POP say "enabled" or "disabled"?

3. Under server admin/mail/settings/advanced - Have you checked the box clear, apop or kerberos depending on your authentication method?

4. Under server admin/mail/settings/advanced - Does Secure sockets layer say: Don't Use, Use or Require?

5. have you tried if you can connect with IMAP?

Thank you for your reply.

1. No
2. Enabled
3. I had not checked the clear method for POP but now I have and it changed nothing.
4. "Don't use"
5. Trying to log into the IMAP server “10.1.1.250” has failed. Please make sure the username and password are correct. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email.

It somehow seems that the postfix mailserver has no knowledge of the users that have been defined using the workgroup manager.

10.1.1.250 indicates that your server is on a private network, it also got a public IP? Are you connecting to it from a computer in the 10.1.1.X range aswell?

try to following to see if your POP, IMAP and SMTP services are online:

open up the terminal, type:

telnet 10.1.1.250 110

If your POP is working properly you will see something similiar to:

Trying 10.1.1.250...
Connected to 10.1.1.250.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK 10.1.1.250 Cyrus POP3 v2.2.12-OS X 10.4.0 server ready <3888281096.1129987809@10.1.1.250>

Do the same to check IMAP and SMTP

telnet 10.1.1.250 143

telnet 10.1.1.250 25

All the tests are positive so the services are all running.

The server is a Xserve that is still running as a test setup connected to an internal address on port 2 and to a valid internet address on port 1.

The user hjgunn is defined in the local domain and the others are defined in a LDAP directory on this server. So I have a bit of both.

And actually I can send messages. I only get an error when I want to check for mail using POP or IMAP.

I have a similar setup on a 10.3 server that is actually working.

It seems like the services are all working as they should, but it's your user accounts that don't verify as they should.

Did you upgrade or migrate from a earlier version, or did you do a clean install?

Format/reinstall is usually a quick fix when something turned x-files on you.
Especially this early in the process.

That's 20 minutes compared to a few hours troubleshooting and hairpulling.
