Issue / Sound volume is locked

Question

Issue / Sound volume is locked

The sound volume is locked on my laptop, the slider is on top, there is no sound at all. Anyone with some feedback, help... Thank you.

Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5, Laptop PowerBook g4, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

it could be caused by hardware failure - either sound board or logic board.

you may want to reset PRAM/PMU :

it could be caused by corrupted preferences in the user account,
as a test you can create new user, log in and see what happens.

if the same thing happens under the new user, it could be OS-wide issue or the hardware
