It could be bad formatting of the hard drive, or bad packaging of the DVD.

If you have nothing to loose, try to reformat your drive and check that you setup a GUID partition map.

If you have a working system, I would try to call Apple before anything else, maybe they can send you the good DVD if this is a packaging problem.

If you erase the drive and get stuck after that, you won't be able to use your machine at all.

I suggest you attempt t install 10.5 on an external drive, then boot from the external hardware drive. This should tell you if the DVD is usable. You might want to run Disk Utility and repair from the second disk. Then attempt to "Erase and install" from the DVD to the disk drive in the laptop.

The comment about the install DVD being incompatible with your computer may be the issue. Was this DVD the original one delivered with your computer.

If this is a retail copy of Mac OS X (not bundled with your mac), that may be the cause of your problem, especially if it was pre-installed with 10.5.1.

As far as I know, but I may be wrong, there is no 10.5.1 retail DVD (only 10.5.0), this could mean your mac is newer than the retail OS X DVD (10.5.0), and you have no other choice that using your Leopard DVD bundled with your machine, because your machine may have some hardware bot handled by the retail 10.5 DVD.
