Paying music with my iphone

Does anyone know how to play music externally with the iphone? I mean with external speakers, so you can hear it better? I plugged some external speakers into the little stereo headphone jack, and it didn't play.

Do I just plug my iphone into an Ipod jack on the bottom and listen?

Or do I plug something into the little round stereo jack in the top?
