First Note Or First Chord Chopped Off After Recording MIDI Region

I just purchased Logic Express 8 about three hours ago and am running 8.0.1. I am hoping to transition from Ableton Live to this, but I have to say that my first experience is a disappointing one. I certainly hope someone here can help me. I've tried to search for the answer if it already exists, but I tried every keyword combination I could think of to no avail.

On to the problem. I insert an instrument track and assign Native Instruments Akoustik Piano to it. I play my keyboard (M-Audio Keystation Pro 88) and everything sounds fine. I arm the track and hit record. I record my part. So far, so good. I press play to audition what I just recorded, and everything sounds fine, but is a little off (not quantized). So, I quantize the track.

Now, when I press play, the first note (or chord, depending on what I'm playing) is abruptly stopped mid-tone. The remaining notes play just fine. This only happens to the very first note (or chord). To add to the mystery, if I loop the recorded region and let the playback loop, the very first note (or chord) then plays back fine after the first pass. But no matter what I do, the very first note (or chord) on the first pass always abruptly stops. I thought maybe something went awry with the quantize, so I deleted the recording and started over. This time I didn't quantize, but unfortunately, the first note/chord issue is still present.

I am pulling my hair out over this. I can't believe something like this is happening, and although I would love for this to end happily, I honestly am not holding my breath. I am terribly frustrated at the moment, and figure it's time to head off to bed. I don't see this resolving itself in the morning, but hopefully someone out there will be kind enough to help me out of this jam.

I should have added the following:

1. The note/chord that is chopped off appears to be the correct length when inspecting the piano roll, so the MIDI information seems to be recording properly.
2. I am running this software on my Mac Pro.
3. I have connected my keyboard to my Mac through USB.

I have checked the notes in question, and they are not before the start of the song, at least according to the piano roll. Moving them to ensure they align perfectly with the left edge of the song doesn't help. Additionally, if I hit nothing but a single note, it is still cut off, so it is not an underlying note issue either. Besides, while it might work to move everything one measure to the right, that act alone leads me to believe the software isn't high quality if it can't be used without "rigging up" a fix.

I found something that might suggest Logic Express sends some sort of "Clear" message at the beginning of a song, and that may be tripping up the plugins to stop making noise. If this is the case, this is sloppy and renders this software useless.

Hopefully there is another explanation and solution, but I appreciate the help so far.

Hi,

it's a bit of a guess what's causing this, bit I tend to either start at bar 2, or drag the song start a tiny bit to the right, so that the song starts at, say, 0 4 3 1 instead of 1 1 1 1.
In the bar ruler above the arrange window, you see a little bracket at bar 1. Simply drag the bracket a little to the left.
Maybe this helps!
Kind regards,
Jaap

Thanks. I'll go ahead and try this to see if anything changes, but I hope there is a solution that doesn't involve shifting the entire project to the right. While I appreciate the help everyone is offering, shifting the project to the right is literally avoiding some underlying issue with Logic. It seems the better solution would be to fix the program (if it is a program error to begin with).

Okay, so I just recorded a piano piece using Logic Express 8 and Akoustik Piano. The first chord was chopped off, so I moved the entire recording 1 beat to the right, and now everything works. Unfortunate, as this is a sloppy "fix" for problematic software.

I have discovered another issue (appears to be a glitch) unrelated to this one, and so after one day I am starting to believe that this software isn't quite what I hoped it would be. Thanks anyway for the help and suggestions. I'd love to see Apple fix this, but I expect their take on it is it's not their problem because it's "problematic" plugins. Sure...
