OK to reformat HD software using Disk Utility?

I bought an external 500-GB hard drive for use with Time Machine on my i-Mac with Leopard. It is a Seagate FreeAgent Pro. The box says "software and drive formatting works only with Windows but you can reformat for Mac using Disk Utility.” I have no experience doing anything with Disk Utility. I'm wondering if I should return the hard drive and get one made specifically for my I-Mac,(Leopard). I would appreciate advice.

No, don't return it. Just follow those directions. More specifically:
1. Attach the hard drive
2. Open Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilities
3. Select the drive from the Source area
4. Select the Partition tab
5. Change the options to Apple Partition Map
6. Click Partition
