Install Failed - No /Volumes/Macintosh HD/BaseSystem.pkg

I've been trying to install Leopard on my MacBook Pro for days. I finally decided to try the Erase and Install option. That experiment ended with the following Install Failed message:

The Installer could not create the folder /Volumes/Macintosh HD/BaseSystem.pkg.1455Wlt36

Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? If not, do you think I'll get any assistance if I take my computer into the Apple Store where I purchased the Leopard upgrade? (I have the AppleCare extended warranty.)

Thanks.
