DVD player error

I can report I'm getting the same error. At the point of the error I was viewing a DVD and hit Menu and got the error. Rebooting did not fix the problem. Oddly enough playing the same DVD in VLC presented no problems.

Moreover I deleted com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist in ~/Library/Preferences and got the same error.

Same issue here. My disc was Arrested Development S1 Disc 1. I went through the tortuous startup of the disc, chose Play All. Everything was fine. I hit menu, clicked Episode Selection, and clicked the first episode in the list. I got the error you mention.

Now when I insert the disc DVD Player immediately goes black. There is no current title or chapter in the Controller. Pressing any button, including Stop, causes "Not Allowed" to be displayed.

I've deleted the DVD Player plist and restarted. Other discs work, just not this one.

EXACT same thing happened-except with me it was season 2 disc 2. but I clicked around the menu and it killed the ability to play that disc.

I am having the same problem with my Season 3 Disc 4 of The Office. Does anyone have any fix for this?

Same problem here. When DVD Player does launch, the image is squeezed. And when I try to use the movie's menu, I get that error message.

There are two ways to solve this. One that's simple, and one that takes a little more effort. In the end, it depends if you want DVD Player to remember where you've left off on the discs you've viewed.

Go to: User Library > Application Support > DVD Player.

Inside the DVD Player folder is one called Settings.

If you don't care whether or not DVD Player remembers where you left off on the discs you've viewed, trash the Settings folder.

If you do care, then you need to be a bit more surgical. First, go to File > Get Disc Info in DVD Player while you've got the disc that won't play properly in the drive. Look at where it says 'Settings File' at the bottom of the window. Though there's a 'Reveal' button, it's always grayed out on my system -- but it may work for you. If not, jot down the settings file name, quit DVD Player, then delete the corresponding file from the Settings folder.

Either way, whether you've deleted a single settings file or the entire settings folder, your disc should once again be playable.

My dvd player problem seems to be different than all the other problems out there, now that Leopard 10.5.2 has been installed by Software Update. Now, my dvd's won't play at all, and I get a dialog box with ??, and then under that I get ?? - 10960. I can't find the DVD player application anywhere on my computer, and yet, previous to 10.5.2, I was able to play dvd's with no problem. I just had to eject the disc, and insert it again if I wanted to resume play at a later date. When I try to download DVD player from Apple's website, it's never the latest version. What the heck happened to my DVD player app?????

I have the same problem, I just attempted to use DVD Player last night... for the first time, First get "Supported Disc not available" and just displays black screen, then selecting any function on DVD player gives "not permitted", after several selections, get "DVD Player encountered a system error" "Error: -69889".

My first thought, this could be because of the new region code enhancement, ( the same disc would not play in a free standing region free DVD player as opposed to the computer it DID however, play in a locked region DVD(2) player)

I removed the settings in the App support folder, as previously suggested - had no effect.

It seems to only play a hand full of DVD's - mainly the freebies with the News papers.

Is there a solution to this?

I have exactly the same problem. And I can't tell if if it dates from upgrading to 10.5.2 or not. I just don't remember when I had watch a DVD last on my computer. Very annoying though. The DVD Player has lost it's icon and always give this error if I try to launch it.
