accessing spaces on remote computer using screen sharing

have screen sharing working via vpn/vnc and everything seems to be working ok except that can not use F8 on the MBP (computer I'm using) to switch spaces on the Mac Pro (remote computer), can switch spaces on the Mac Pro by opening applications that are locked to a particular space....
