My iPhone was working fine and charging and syncing reliably until today. I stopped into an Apple store to ask about what to do when the phone occasionally froze. The attendant scanned some things, showed me how to reset the phone, and sent me on my way. When I got home, I connected the phone via USB to my laptop to charge and sync it - and nothing. So I switched to the AC adapter - still nothing. I tried it in my car with the adapter and got a charge on my way to my destination (15 minutes), but on the way home - again, nothing. This is quite distressing, as the phone is now at "low battery" and is useless to me. Any ideas?

iPhone, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

id go right back and tell them that after you left the phone was messed up when it was fine before. sounds like it possibly got damaged some how (i assume when they scanned stuff they hooked it up)

Actually, they didn't hook it up to anything, they just visually checked the settings. I'm planning to go back to the store tomorrow, but I'm wondering if there are any ideas I can take into the store with me.

Have you tried to restore your iPhone?
If you have tried the troubleshooting steps recommended without any luck, I would just go to the Apple store and tell them what you have already tried and that despite that, the iPhone cannot hold a charge...

I have tried all the trouble shooting, no luck. And it's more than just a lack to hold the charge - it won't even receive a charge. iTunes won't recognize it as a device. Just bizarre.

This should be the info you will need when going to the Apple Store.
    Good luck!

Just so it's said (but I'm afraid won't help in your particular case because you wrote that you plugged it into your laptop which I'm assuming was straight in and is the computer that you activated the iPhone with), I have found that I am unable to sync by plugging into a USB "hub." If I do not plug right into my iMac's USB my iPhone will not sync. I am able to charge via the outlet charger though.

Unsure if anyone else is having this?

I am having exactly the same problem...Just got the iphone on 12/23/07...works great/no problems...2 nights ago, i'm in the car and it starts to make this high pitched electronic screeching sound....next morning, I open the phone and it's dead...no charge at all, which was odd because when I went to bed, it had 1/2 a battery left. So, I tried to charge it and NOTHING...it's like it's not recognizing that I'm trying to charge it. I tried to charge it every which way...on the computer, in the car, in the outlet and in the sync dock. Maybe it's charging but it's just not showing that it is...I don't know but I'm very upset.
Please let me know if you find a remedy to this problem...I understand that if it goes back to Apple to be fixed (or AT&T) it takes several days and then you're left without a phone...I rely on this phone for sheduling for work... hope there's a solution! Feel free to email me at jooreo40@aol.com if you find the cure!
    Thanx...

if you go into an apple store they may swap the phone out right there (they did when my home button went bad, i spent more time waiting around because i showed up early for my appointment than i did working with the tech).

how long did you leave it on a charger the next morning?

leave it on for at least 10-15 mins and then see if it still will not turn on

    Matt-
I left it on the charger for about 3 hours. I bought it at AT&T. I hope they swap it for me.

if it still didnt turn on then ya take it back or take it to an apple store, if you have an extra wire from an ipod or another iphone or what ever you could try that the cable could have always gone bad (and if you go into the apple store make sure to take the cables and dock with you because they will want to check that with the phone

OK Matt...Explain this one.,,So, I've stayed off the internet with the phone since the problem started because I didn't want to lose the battery altogether. So, today, I decide that I have nothing to lose and I push the safari button to go online and all of a sudden, the iphone shows a battery sign with a small amount of green to the left showing instead of the very thin line of red that has been showing since the problem started...All of a sudden, my battery is back! WHAT HAPPENED? And what did I do to fix it? Now I'm really confused but very happy that the battery is now registering the charge.

was it on the charger at the time??

the only words i have for that is that my mind is now officially blown
