Second Life on iMac?

Hi all. I am thinking of buying a new intel based iMac, and wondered how other Second Life users are finding theirs?

Will Second Life run on your iMac? And if so, how often does it crash?

I'm not overly concerned about frame rate, as I'm in New Zealand where low end DSL is as good as it gets.

All feedback welcome please, I've seen a few comments but not enough to sway me either way. And the local retail outlets don't seem to be technically able to hook up their demo iMacs for a look-see.

Thanks in hope

Thanks very much a brody, I've had a look but can't find anything much relating to Second Life on your list. Nice thought though!

I'm just hoping that someone here is using it on a new iMac, or is willing to give it a try just out of curiosity perhaps. It's free to download and to play by the way 🙂

Cheers

Hi, thanks, yes I could run bootcamp if the OS proved to be an issue, but my main concern is Second Life's compatibilty with the HD2600 graphics cards that are in the new iMacs. SL is very picky when it comes to graphics cards, and in an unpredictable way, unfortunately. I know they're powerful enough, but are they a match? It seems that only experience will tell.

Find a store that lets you play the game at their shop:

http://www.apple.com/nz/buy/

Then you'll be able to see if you can get the performance you desire.

Mind you since there is website integration, make sure the browser support for the game is well written and pick a browser that works best*:

I sold my MacBook Pro just 2 months after I bought it because it couldn't run SL. (The graphics card issue.) I spent 2 months trying the workaround which worked until Mac update was installed, etc etc. Then I went to the store, tried the new Imacs, all seemed well. I sold my MacBook Pro to my father who had kindly poured a glass of wine on his laptop and needed to be rescued asap and bought Imac. I brought it home, SL worked the first couple of times I logged in. Then - torture. Given that this is a serious part of my life as a producer, it has been painful. I am book using my old PowerBook G4, clunky but at least I can hang out in world.

My new Imac? Depressing... Believe me, neither Apple or Linden support have been ANY help.
