BOM file missing

First, I find it very hard to believe there are only two other posts on here that contain the phrase "BOM" or "bill of materials," especially since I recall seeing many posts.

Why have these posts been removed? Was the issue ever resolved?

I also find it hard to believe that Apple does not document this behavior and provide a workaround. Yet the support search engine comes up empty, so I guess it's true. Ridiculous.

I've been having this problem for ages--network imaging has been by far the most nightmarish aspect of OS X Server.

grep -i BOM /var/log/* turns up nothing

Can someone tell me what BOM file it's looking for and under what circumstances does it exist? What is it required for?

A workaround would be nice too!

I just finished 2 school computer labs (windows) with norton ghost. I was able to ghost a machine from a base image, install drivers and from that create another image for the rest of the lab. Until OS X's network installation utilities can provide that basic level of service, I will always look on the OS X deployment process as flaky.

I'm now trying Mike Bombich's NetRestore, which I've had problems with before. I'm hoping this time will be better.

Specs are 10.4.2 on a (very expensive) xserve. The image source is an external firewire drive.
