Cinema Display connection cable

Does anyone know if the cable coming out of the back of the Cinema Display is replaceable? My cat started using it as a chew toy and I didn't realize it until he'd done quite a bit of damage to it. It still works fine for the most part. When I moved it around a bit the screen went blue for a few seconds and then switched back to the desktop... almost like it lost the signal for a second.

I'd just like to know if it is possible to have this repaired if it ever came to that... or if I'll be stuck with a useless monitor because of a chewed up cable.

thanks a lot for any info.

Cables like the one you need are sometimes to be found on EBay using key word Apple DVI cable 20 LCD or Apple DVI cord 20 and in combination of words like: Apple dvi replacement 20 inch, Apple dvi cord cinema 20. I see them all the time going for around 30 to 40 dollars. Make sure that you have the exact same. The cable replacement procedure are straightforward, nothing to solder, just remove and replace, be very careful not to force taking apart the connectors at the board ends. I fixed many clear, acrylic models, but I do not have any experience on the newer aluminium models so I cannot say. Use proper size allen keys and philips tools to do it and take time. You can also Google something like DVI monitor cable replacement procedure Apple 20 LCD. Give it a try and see. I have a friend who had the cable of his 17 inch monitor professionally replaced and the price was more than half of the monitor itself. I don't think anyone stockpiles parts but you can also try buying the same monitor with a broken screen and have many parts left over in case of future need. I saw a 20 Apple lcd with a cracked screen sell for 92 bucks as is. Another Idea I had but didn' do it yet was to get a new DVI cable usually sold as a regular DVI 6 footer at both ends at any computer store and cutting it in half and using an ohm meter and marking each pin with the color coding corresponding with the broken one. The colors on both cables are probably different but it is the pin matching that is important. One you know which pin is for which wire then all you have to do is put them together ( soldering is preferred but not absolute) and tape them up. That is the cheapest way I know of. I hope I have been o some help.

My cat did the exact same thing, they love that Apple rubber to chew on. Yes the cable can be changed entirely, I did the research and discovered that you have to take apart the rear panel and a couple of hold down brackets and yank out I beleive 4 or 5 connectors from the main board. Not too difficult but the hard part is the finding of an exact replacement cable. Sometimes Ebay has them but make sure they are the exactly the same as the one you have, and I mean exactly especially the end connectors as the 22 and 23 inch models are different. I fixed mine for free myself by first shutting down and unplugging the monitor out from the computer. The I would carefully remove the grey outer protective cover with a very small scissor about one inch from each end of the damage. What you have is about 2 dozen multicolored cables exposed ready to be examined. Check to see which one(s) need to be cut and rejoined together by following the colors. you do not really need to solder them but a good few twists of the exposes metal and tape with electrical tape. Make sure there are no exposes bare wires and cover everything up with generous amounts of tape. Keep wire off the floor or cat will do same trick.

We have a 20" Apple Cinema Display that has a broken pin on the DVI connector end. I like the idea of replacing the entire cord. Can you please give me any specific information on how to go about finding and exact replacement cable? How do I find a part number or other identifying information about the cable on the monitor that we have? Is there anyone around that stockpiles spare parts for recycling that we might purchase a cable from? Got to love those cats - have 19 myself.

Just thought of something that happend to me a few years ago. I had bought a used flat screen monitor dirt cheap because the seller said that it was not working right and sold it to me for 15 dollars at a garage sale. I really bought it for the stand to replace mine that was the same make and model. I did notice that one pin of the DVI connector was missing but in reality had gone inwards. I got a very fine tweezer and slowly managed to pull it forward to the same length of the others. I straightened it out to the same spacing as the others and applied a small bit of grazy glue at the base of it so it would not go back inside again. Hooked it up and now I have 2 fine working identical monitors. I hope this is also your case.

Hello

I need an answer to similar questions but i shall be very specific. We have an aluminium bodied 23" Cinema Display and the cable is now broken. The oval power connector that runs to the white block (transformer) was squished by a chair leg.

So what i want to do is one of the following:

1/ Learn how to break into the monitor and release the whole cable assembly OR

2/ Locate the oval connectors from a parts manufacturer and re-build that.

Has anyone got any light they can shine for me?

Thanks
Phil
