bridging mac mini to xbox 360 to use xbox live...HELP!

i've done this once before with a previous router i was just trying out and it worked great. however, i purchased a wireless router and cant get it to work again. i've found all the instructions that the internet has to offer when it comes to using your mac as a bridge to get on xbox live...the fact that i've done it successfully hopefully shows that. my problem now comes in the DNS stage...it always fails.

i think the problem is this...in the termminal when i type in ifconfig en0...the inep i get is 192.768.2.1...but when i check to see what my router IP is...it's the same. is this what is causing my problem and not letting me get on xbox live?

when i go to my xbox settings...under IP i know its working because on the xbox live test it passes every time...and just fails at DNS which is where i'm supposed to put my router IP which happens to be the same as my normal IP.

is this the problem?

i called my ISP and they said there's nothing they can do about it...they cant change my router IP. i hope you guys can help. i really want to get on without having to spend 50*100 bucks. thanks.

If I understand correctly, you are running an ethernet cable (Cat5e) between the XBox and the Mac mini, then the Mac mini is connected to your router wirelessly?
Your mini and the router can't be having the same IP, else you wouldn't be able to connect to the internet. Be careful when comparing the IPs, as many newer routers are 'smart' and when your modem passes a NAT routed IP like 192.168.1.2 to it, the router then hands out IPs like 192.168.2.1 - note that the last two octets (sets of numbers between periods) have changed. If your modem isn't acting as a NAT router I am not sure why your IP ranges would be what you've given.
If I don't understand your setup correctly, please give the step by step path and devices you are using to make the connection. Even if I can't find your answer, this will make it easier for anyone who might provide you one.

To get XBOX live to connect I had to "open" the ports of my linksys router to allow data to pass through.

The diagnostic set up screen on the xbox360 shows either "open" or "Closed" and you need to open the ports to set it to "open" ... when its open you can play with other online gamers 🙂

I did this by accessing the "applications and games" tab in the linksys wrt54G router and then just added these settings.

It's a year ago now, but I think i got the info from Microsoft...

MAC filtering is a security measure to allow only the devices you enter into the router MAC table to work (or not work, depending on your preference!). On linksys its under the wireless tab > wireless mac filtering.

I also set up a static IP for my XBOX so I can use Connect 360 to stream ilife stuff to it....

okay...here's my complete set up. i have my mac mini which is connected to my belkin wireless connection which is upstairs. the belkin router is plugged into my cable modem (road runner if that matters). i pick up a full signal on my mini. from my xbox360 to my mac mini, i have an ethernet cable connected.

when i type in ifconfig en0 in the terminal, the "inet" i get is 192.68.2.1. this is to be used in the IP section of connecting to xbox live as i understand. actually, each time i try to connect, it passes all of the IP tests.

the problem comes with the DNS. from what i understand, what i'm supposed to put in the DNS section of my xbox live is the number i get when i type in DIG in the terminal and then scroll down to where it says server. the number i get there is also 192.168.2.1.

i type that into the dns and it does not work.

my firewall is off...my sharing is on. i'm not sure what to do.

to make sure that my xbox is working, i plugged in my dell laptop and bridged the connections and it worked great. but i need it to work with my mac...at least i want it to. thanks.

I set up my XBOX 360 with "edit network settings" panel as follows:

(1) In the first section of the Network settings I have set IP to manual..so it does not interfere with the other machines & I can forward the ports for "live".

(2) In the second section I have the DNS in XBOX 360 set to Automatic and it picks up automatically from the router.

(3) The third set of settings is for the security (protocol and password).

I needed to restart the xbox for it to pick the dns up from the router.

Hope this helps! I know how frustrating it can be because I tried to set up the DNS manually & it just wouldnt work.

i tried that out...going automatic on DNS...and it still didnt work. its killing me. i plugged the 360 into my dell laptop, bridged the connection and was on...it was pretty easy. i got a 48 hour free trial code and had a blast. i just wish it would work on my mac...it would be a lot easier on me. any other ideas? i really think it has something to do with the fact that both addresses are coming up the same.
