I lost my Documents folder!

I may have solved my problem even before I ask it, but I want to make sure I understand what's going on. I was performing two operations involving Finder and so had several instances of it open.

First, I was in the process of copying some files from my external hard drive to the folder Documents. Second, I was manually copying some images from another folder inside Documents.

All of a sudden, I heard a sound similar to a pop or gunshot; I thought I saw something like a puff of smoke, also, presumably indicating something bad had happened or I had zapped a file or folder.

I then discovered that one of the images I had been copying had replaced my folder Documents. I THINK what happened is that my finger slipped off the mouse, and when I put it back on I somehow dropped the image where Documents used to be.

Amazingly, my finder is still copying files to Documents, which I quickly tracked down. It's now inside MacIntosh HD > UserName

So it will be easy enough to move it back where it was when I'm finished copying my files. So to get to the point, I guess I just have two questions:

1. Is there a default folder named Documents in the master usersname folder (the one named MyName)? If so, I presumably replaced it with the Documents folder I inadvertently moved.

2. Can someone tell me what happened? Even if I inadvertently dropped an image I was copying in another location, how can it bounce a folder into a new folder?

Thanks.

On second thought, this is just a bit more complex than I realized. When I open Finder, on the left I see the headings Devices, Places and Search For. Under Places, I used to see the following:

Places
Desktop
UserName
Documents
Applications

Now, Desktop is no longer visible, because it's been moved inside the folder UserName. So what I need to know is how to move it back where it was. I can't seem to drag it back into position, because I apparently can't paste anything between the folders UserName and Applications.

Thanks.

Yes, there is a Documents folder inside each user's home directory.

I have no explications for the sound of the "poof" effect you thought you saw.
But what I know, is there is no suh thing as "MacIntosh HD > UserName". It is always "Macintosh HD > Users > UserName > Documents".

Maybe you can bounce on that and determine more accurately what happened ?

The "poof" effect sounds like what happens when you remove an application or folder from the dock . . . or what happens when you remove something from the quick links to the right of the folder.

My guess is you simply removed something from the quick links on your finder window. Are you sure the "documents" folder actually moved? On your finder, you can set up the view so it will show the path of the documents. Once you've done that, search for one of the docs in your documents folder in spotlight, open it in finder, and see if 1) it is in a documents folder and 2) where that documents folder is.

I can't remember where it is supposed to be, so post those results and someone who knows can verify if the documents folder is still in the right place.

Sorry for the confusion, everyone. I cited an incorrect path in my first post. The Documents folder is actually at...

McIntosh HD > Users > MyName > Documents

I suspect Smileswearily's theory is right - the folder is right where it already was; I simply deleted "Documents" from Finder's QuickLinks. Does anyone know how I can restore Documents to QuickLinks?

Thanks.

I was going to ask "Drag WHAT" over to QuickLinks, but I figured it out. I dragged my Documents folder itself, and the word "Documents" magically appeared.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if I can create additional linked titles by dragging other folders over there? For example, if I created a new folder named Animals and drug it over the QuickLinks area, would it create a link named Animals?

I'm afraid to try it lest I mess something up.

Thanks.

OK, I'm confused. I drug an image to the word Documents in my QuickLinks, and it was simply moved inside that folder. I tried a second time, and the NAME of the image appeared under the word Documents. When I tried to move the image back to where I got it from, it vanished.

Also, I don't understand the comment about dragging images to the toolbar. Are you referring to the toolbar on Finder? Nothing happens when I try to drag an image there.

The images I was experimenting with are fairly large jpgs; maybe it will work if I try some tiny gif's, but it doesn't seem be functioning right at all.

Thanks.

I think you missed that point. Sidebar items can be used different ways : you can click on it to open, or you can drag and drop files on it. But if you drag item between two sidebar items, this will actually add them to the sidebar. Yes, it can be confusing, especially because sidebar items are not that big

Also, I don't understand the comment about dragging images to the toolbar. Are you referring to the toolbar on Finder? Nothing happens when I try to drag an image there.

Again, it is a bit tricky, you have to let your mouse a few moments on the toolbar, until the "plus" sign appear, then release the button.

What's your goal exactly ? put that files into the "Documents" folder ? If yes, then no matter how big are the files, it should work immediately.

I was just using big images to experiment with because I didn't have any smaller icons. I'm not interested in dropping images off between QuickLink titles - unless smaller icons will default to the same line as a title. For example, there are small icons just BEFORE the words Applications and Documents. It might be kind of cool to do something like that.

Also, I tried holding my mouse still until a plus appears. It works.

Thanks again.

Oops, I guess my last post didn't post. Anyway, I was just experimenting with larger images because I didn't have any smaller icons handy. Also, I don't want to display images between QuickLink titles; rather, I'd like to display tiny icons BEFORE each title, similar to the icons in front of the words Applications and Documents. But I suspect they'll default to that position if they're small enough.

Also, I drug an image to the toolbar and held the mouse down for a while. It worked.

Thanks.
