LaserWriter 12/640 PS: How to suppress info page at startup?

Have an old (but solid!) LaserWriter 12/640 PS printer Ethernetted through an Asante "FriendlyNet" adaptor to a MacBook running OS 10.4.11.

Question is: Can I suppress/disable the printing of a test or info page each time the printer is powered up?

Is there a "Printer Settings" utility that can disable this? (Don't seem to find any such app on my system)

Can I (carefully!) edit some option in one of the .ppd files in the Printer Descriptions folder on my HD? (Given explicit enough instructions, I can probably do this using BBEdit -- but I see a couple of Laserwriter 12/640 files in that folder, so I'm not sure which one is actually used.)

Thanks for any advice.

That option is set semi-permanently inside the printer. You change it with "Apple Printer Utility", and you will need a Mac that can run Classic or OS9 to run the Utility, but only booting to a CD is required, you need not install OS 9 on a Hard drive.

One changed, the printer will remember the change permanently, so a friend or a local Apple reseller may be able to help you. If you have to take the printer somewhere, try not to shake up the cartridge too much or you will spill toner all over the inside of the cartridge and ruins its image quality.

The North American English version is available as the second and third links on the printing section of the Older Software Downloads page:

The links look like:

As you know a MacBook can't run classic but you do have another option. If you have Windows on your MacBook or can get access to a Windows system you can use the Windows version to do the same thing. You will need to do a custom install for only the Apple Printer Utility as you don't need the other 2 things. You can get the program from http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/DOS-Windows/Printing/ LaserWriter_for_Windows_NT/LWNT10.ZIP
