Eric,

You posted in the wrong forum. This one is for Intel-based iMacs.

1. You need the Airport Extreme card (link).

2. Despite what Apple says you can install 2GB of RAM. One 1GB PC2700 200pin SODIMM and one 1GB PC2700 184pin DIMM:

3. Mac OS 10.5 will work fine (especially with an extra 1GB of RAM installed) but bear in mind it's early days and some applications/peripherals may not work right away. Check first.

4. Some general tips to improve performance:

  • Quit Safari often; it suffers serious memory leaks that Apple doesn't seem in a hurry to fix and will gobble up your RAM.
  • Keep your hard disk nice and empty. Once you fill your hard disk above the 85% level you'll start to get fragmentation and the available space for virtual memory is not there.
  • Use a system maintenance application like MacJanitor (link).
  • Quit applications when you're not using them.

Have a look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. How much Free and Inactive RAM do you have? If the processor regularly being tasked to 100%? How many Page Outs do you have?

cheers

Very confident. Since I put 1.5GB in my Tiger iMac G4 1.25GHz in September 2005 I've had no problems. I've also read every single post in the iMac (Flat Panel) (iMac G4) forum in the last two years and never heard of anyone having a problem in that respect.

Admittedly I put the 1GB in the AASP-slot but it's all the same.

mrtotes,

I'm looking to purchase an iMac G4 tomorrow and I've got a few options of ones with different memory load-outs.

Have I read correctly from your previous post, in that DIMM0/J22 is the 'user serviceable' and DIMM1/J290 is the 'technican slot' ?

I'm interested to know, as the person I'm buying off is swapping some memory around first and I need to be sure thermal paste has been applied if he's changed the 'technican slot' memory, as I don't want an overheat on my hands!

Thanks
Martin

Hello,

Yes J22 is the user-accesible SODIMM slot on the 1.25GHz models. It's labelled J12 on earlier (PC133 SDRAM) iMac G4s. Thermal Paste must be replaced on the two pillars once the J20 DIMM, hard disk, PRAM battery or Optical drive have been updated.
