Error Codes

I am trying to copy / paste a video clip from one drive to another and am getting an error code. The current code is error code - 1309. 1) What is the current problem? 2) Is there a place to go to where I can plug in this code to find out what the issue is in the future?

"If you are copying files from your OS X partition to external drive or a Boot Camp partition and receive Finder Error Code -1309, it most likely means you are copying a file greater than 4 GB in size, which is the maximum a FAT32 formated drive can support." See link below.

When asking a question, it is helpful to post what version of Mac OS you are using and what Mac machine. How have you formated the target drive? See disk utility
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility

2) Is there a place to go to where I can plug in this code to find out what the issue is in the future?

google search on:
mac os 1309

See:

See the above link for solutions.

Hi--

What is the format of the drive you're trying to copy the file to? Is it possible the file is bigger than 2GB and it's too big for the file system on the other drive? That error is this:

<pre class="command">fileBoundsErr = -1309, /*file's EOF, offset, mark or size is too big*/</pre>

Which kind of leads me to this opinion.

As for finding them in the future, do a Google search for "MacErrors.h" and there are a few places where people have posted either the contents of that header file, or ways to search for the errors. Find one that fits your comfort level. Be aware that some solutions, like this one:

require the Xcode tools to be installed.

Prior to using my new external HD for the 1st time, I was aware of the 4 GB size limitation when transferring/copying files to a FAT32 formatted drive. Knowing that fact, I wanted to experiment so I left the ex HD FAT32 formatted and attempted to copy iMovie files (approx 11 GB per file).

Surprisingly (at least to me), I was able to copy these iMovie files (definitely larger than the supposed 4 GB max) onto the FAT32 formatted external HD. I was able to do this about 10 different times involving several different iMovie files. No issues for the first 10 or so attempts, but now I cannot copy anything to that same external HD that's larger than 4GB (I get the error code 1309).

I have not changed any settings or anything on the external HD. Has anyone else had this issue?

Ex HD is Western Digital 500 GB "My book".
My computer iMac (OS X 10.4.11).
