ATI Radeon 9600 XT & SyncMaster 305T - problems

Hi everyone - I just purchased a 30" Samsung SyncMaster 305T and have been trying to get it to run properly. I have a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 with the ATI Radeon 9600 XT card. The largest resolution it's allowing me to set on the monitor preferences window is 1280x800 (ideally i'd like the option for 2560 x 1600). Anyone know if there's any incompatibility issues with this monitor/graphics card combo? Please help.... otherwise, i'll have to either return the monitor or buy a new graphics card. Soooooo bummed. =[ Thank you in advance!

You need a graphics card with dual-link DVI. Starting with the fastest:

ATI Radeon X800 XT 256MB (ADC, dual-link DVI)

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 MB (Two dual-link DVI)

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB (Two dual-link DVI)

ATI Radeon 9650 XT (Single-link, dual-link DVI)

The ATI Radeon 9600 XT does not have dual-link DVI. You can't tell just by looking at the connector. The dual link holes may be there, but nothing is connected to them. The only 9600 with dual-link DVI is the ATA Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition, which was never installed in any computers sold by Apple, though they did sell the board for a while as an upgrade.

i just picked up a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro MAC card this weekend and I'm happy to report my monitor is now working correctly. Just an FYI..... although the SyncMaster 305t is quite the bargain, i still would have preferred the Apple 30" due to it's better matte screen finish. The SyncMaster isn't as matte as the apple, but still a very good monitor... and you can movie it up or down and swivel it side-to-side.... and it's HUGE! =)

I guess I have the same issue with Roman more or less.
I have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with an ATI Radeon 9800 XT
and it has one DVI and one ADC port in the back and I just got a
30" apple display. The resolution was as Roman said very low.
So I would need to get another card with dual DVI links, right?
Is it something I can easily install myself or do I need an expert?
Also where is the best place to get the card?

Welcome to the forums, Rabidart!

First off, you're probably better off starting a new topic for your question, since this one is marked as "answered" and many folks won't see your new question at the bottom.

But since I'm already here...

Secondly, I notice that you're running Leopard. I'd recommend staying away from the ATI cards if you're powering a 30" on a G5. For an explanation, check out this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195747&start=0&tstart=0

You have two options: deal with the inherent ATI issues until Apple or ATI/AMD address them, or get a compatible nVidia GEForce AGP card with Dual-Link DVI. There are many on eBay, and a few users in the thread listed above have installed them with a 100% success rate (so far).

By the way, a replacement card, once you find one, is VERY easy to install. Retail packages will include instructions, and many of the sellers on eBay include instructions with theirs.

Good luck!

Thanks Kwamster for the helpful info.
It might have saved me some headaches if I had gotten the cards that everyone is complaingin
about.
So If I get the nVidia GEForce AGP card with Dual-Link DVI those haven't gotten much issues
at all like the ones described on the link you posted?
Want to make sure.
I also started a new topic just replied to roman's after I read his thread.
