How to restore downloads stack to dock?

By mistake I moved my downloads stack into the trash. I was able to find the downloads folders for both downloads and mail downloads in spotlight (all the documents and files that I suppose I have downloaded over time), but I don't know how to restore a downloads stack and icon back into the dock. I went to a recent mail with an attachment and tried to download it, but I think it just went into a downloads folder somewhere. Could someone please assist me. I enjoyed the automatic downloads stack in the dock.
Also, I was able to find the downloads folders in spotlight, but I'm not sure where they are exactly in the leopard system.
thanks

I just figured this out this morning. Open your finder window and in your home/username directory, there is a Downloads folder (as previously mentioned). Drag that down to the dock by the trash bin, just where it was before. An alias didn't do what I want.

From here, if you click on it, it'll probably show you a grid of icons, but I wanted the fan as before. If you want that, right click (if you have a 2-button mouse, or else do a double-tap on the pad) and under "View as", select "Fan". Right-click again and under "Sort by", select "Date Added".

The folder called Downloads is in your Home folder (unless you've shifted it).

In general, in a spotlight search using the icon in the menu bar, if you hover the mouse over the item its path appears. Alternatively you can click a folder which opens it. From here, among the ways to get to the enclosing folder are to right click on the window title. A list of enclosing folders appears and you want the first one below the name of the folder itself.

To expand slightly on Barney's explanation, the icon of a stack in the dock is the folder icon only if there is nothing in the folder. It is possible that the awaited 10.5.2 update will allow users to change the present behaviour.

Mind you the Downloads folder is about the only one where the present behaviour makes any sense, because by default it shows you the latest download, including a status indicator if it is still downloading.
