Japanese fonts in word/text edit

Ok, so I know that it is possible to switch to an active japanese font (the one that changes from regular latin to hiragana/katakana etc.) but I don't remember how to do it so far and the fonts just don't work (ie. Osaka)

In System Prefs go to International and Input Menu. Turn on Character Palate and Kana Palate and also click Kotoeri and any or all selections under that. Then at the very bottom of the window click "Show input menu in menu bar" and you will get an icon up near the time and date of your top right desktop menu. Depending on what you select, there will be an American flag for regular US fonts, romaji, hiragana あ、or katakana ア. For Kanji, use hiragana input to for example type あい and then while those hiragana letters have an underline still under them, hit the spacebar and you will get kanji choices pronounced that way 合い,愛 etc. The Japanese fonts should type in Word or any word processor.

Hope this is what you are asking about.
