A few months ago I had my optical DVD drive replaced on my Mac Book Pro then installed Leopard. Since then, I can't play most DVD's because I keep getting a "Skipping over damaged files" error. All the DVDs play normally on DVD players without any issues.
Steve -
I found another thread that suggested downloading the 10.5.1 update to take care of some other drive issues. This hasn't totally solved my problems, but it has worked for some.
I have a brand new MBP that's only 6 weeks old and this has been happening quite frequently. I take meticulous care of my DVD's (I'm the type that has them all alphabetized) so there isn't a smudge on 'em. Hopefully Apple finds a fix - I'm a new convert from Windows...isn't this why I bought a Mac? Because "they just work" ?? Argh.
Just want to add my voice to the chorus. All DVDs skip about every 15 to 20 minutes of play. They just hang with that skipping CD noise and then eventually proceed. This box is about 1.5 months old.
I have been experiencing the same problem. Apple replaced my optical drive, but the disks continue to say skipping over damaged areas. These disks worked fine on other computers, but after playing in my MBP with 10.5.1, they also skip in other players (either computer drive or a regular DVD drive), leading me to conclude that not only are my drives not playing the disks but are actually damaging them at the same time. This is a huge problem. I'm going back to the store today to see what they suggest.
Strange just got stranger - the previously damaged disks all of a sudden played fine, both on the MBP and on other machines, except for one, which after a few minutes began the skipping over damaged area routine. The tech at the store brought up the error log, and from the numerous kernal errors felt it was perhaps related to the operating system, which they need to reinstall. I will let you know if that resolves the issue.
