Socket Problem with PHP and MySQL

I have a brand-new install of Tiger Server running on an Xserve, with mysql and php both running happily. I am able to view my databases just fine in Navicat, but whenever I try to connect to a mysql database from php (using mysql_connect), I get a sock error:

Could not connect to MySQL: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (13)

I have read in the forms how you need to specify in the my.cnf file the sock, which is what I've done, and that doesn't help.

Any ideas?

For PHP to connect to MySQL on Tiger Server, make sure you've followed these instructions.

If you changed your php.ini file to have PHP connect to the default MySQL socket, maybe the problem is just that you need to fix the permissions on the <code>/var/mysql</code> directory.

I followed the instructions on that page, and now I'm getting a different error:

"Could not connect to MySQL: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

I'm running mysql 4.1.10a, with php 4.3.11.

That's a very common problem. You can find the solution here.

Basically, it tells you that to get around this, without upgrading the MySQL client or other API you're using to connect to MySQL, just run the OLD_PASSWORD() function on any passwords created with MySQL Server 4.1 or greater.
