Red and green lines on my screen

For the last two months, small red and green vertical lines (which look like small clumps of barcode) have been appearing all over the screen of my iBook G4. They're not always there, but they come and go as they please, regardless of what program I'm using.
The lines don't appear in screenshots, but they do appear on other computers if I'm desktop sharing on iChat. I haven't tried reformatting, but I only want to do it with some assurance that it will be worth the effort. Does anyone know a fix?
