Please help - any way to set alarms for read-only events?

I posted this before but got no answer.

Please at least tell me if you know it's impossible.

By the way - I'm subscribing to a read-only Google calendar - is the same true of iCal calendar read-only subscriptions?

2.33GHz Macbook Pro, various others, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Nobody replied to this post either.

I discovered a clumsy work-around which is to use edit/copy an event from a read-only calendar and paste it into one of my local calendars. I can set alarms in my local calendars.

This is lame.
