Projector compatability?

hi all, i'm interested in a toshiba projector (costs around £230) but wasn't sure if it is compatible with the mac. I emailed toshiba and this is what they said;

"thank you very much for you inquiry via e-mail. In general, the TDP-S8 supports any SVGA signal via the monitor-in interface
(D-sub 15 pin socket) coming from a computer. As long as the graphic chip in your Mac supports an SVGA resolution ( 800
by 600 pixels), the projector can be used with a Mac as well."

can anyone shed any light on this? or maybe advice on a good projector in my (bottom end) price range?

Hello Shane,

Connecting this projector to your Mac shouldn't be a problem. You have to use your DVI-D-SUB convertor to connect them to each other.
Why? Because the projector has only a D-sub input for computers and not a DVI input.

Shane,

This SHOULD work but I would see if you can get ahold of one and test beforehand. The MBP's have been known to be picky when it comes to projectors. I personally am only able to get mine to work with ~50% of the projectors i've tried so far.

Some folks have had good experience using the Dr.Bott GHead II to trick the MBP into sending the signal but for me this isn't a great option and i find myself asking why such a high end laptop has issues with such a basic function.

I reported this to Apple when i bought my MBP (1.5 years ago, it's 1st gen) but nothing seems to have changed. If you search this forum you'll see folks with issues even with the newer "Santa Rosa" versions.

so bottom line, test before you buy.

thanks guys, this helps loads, can you recommend a projector that is of a good-ish quality and certain to work with my MPB? of course i'll not hold you to it if for some weird and wonderful reason it doesn't

I really couldn't say since it's really a crap-shoot. My advice would be to go to a local electronics outfit and try and find one that works "consistently". then when you know the make/model you can buy online if you choose.

I am at the point now where i am going to have to do the same thing since i can't rely on my laptop to work with any old projector that happens to be in a given conference room. i am not looking forward to carting around my own projector but it is what it is.

Thanks for the info regarding Dr.Bott GHead II trick...it may actually fix our MBP problems.
