Quick Time 7.3 trouble with FCP 4.5 capture

I've read virtually every post on the issue with Quicktime 7.3 and capturing in FCP 4.5. Does anyone know if there is an actual Apple based fix?
My issue is that the preview window has color bars and says "Preview Disabled". The computer controls my Sony deck.... but no image in the preview. And it doesn't capture. You can put in and out points in, but it doesn't capture.
I tried using Pacifist to extract some files from 7.2 and place them in the folder... (man, was THAT over my head) but it didn't seem to solve my problem as it did for everyone else. Everyone else had capturing getting stuck at 5 or 6 minutes.... I never got that far. Capture and preview just don't seem to work. And this only happened since I upgraded to Tiger and Quicktime 7.3.
I noticed most of these posts happened a few weeks ago. Wondering if there are any great answers by now.
Thanks.

*Wondering if there are any great answers by now.*

There are as Craig outlined.

*Does anyone know if there is an actual Apple based fix?*

There in all probability won't be a fix.

4.5 is at least three years old. The old adage that if it ain't broken then don't fix it works here, particularly for this old a professional app

Find the OS and QT versions that work well and create a volume that you can boot to with that configuration.

Or upgrade.
