While using the trackpad to scroll down a web page, my MBP gets ripples on the display. I looked at the activity Monitor while doing this and it never went passed 60% used. I have 2g of RAM with the 2.2ghz processor. Is this normal??
I also have this problem! I am using fire fox at the moment and it isn't doing it anymore.I really like Safari but can't stand the ripples. It seems the only application it does it in is Safari.
Hi,
my MBP has the same problem, with Safari more often, but also with Opera.
I remember once I had this already several months ago, but after a while smg (unfortunately no clue, what) fixed it...
but it came back today 😟
If it's a hardware problem, why does apple claim they are "working on it"? You probably were just lucky in the fact that they replaced your laptop with one that doesn't suffer from the issue.
Another update on and still no change or solution! Are apple hoping that this problem will just go away?? Come on those affected, keep posting and lets get this issue back on Apples radar!
Add me to the list. The ripples are small but when you focus on a certain paragraph and watch it scroll, the ripples are visible. If you watch the entire page it seems to 'flicker' as you scroll.
This is now my third MacBook Pro. The first two exhibited the 'strange vertical stripes' but none of the rippling (though I cannot be sure, as they were running 10.5.3. I am now on 10.5.4). The first two were from the same shipment so I waited for a new shipment before swapping for my third. I thought it was better but it would seem I was wrong.
I have this issue since 10.5.1, no change in 10.5.4. It's groce, it is contraproductive and I am starting to get really angry about this. This is a farce, Apple, and you know it. I demand immediate correction!
Me too! Just bought a MacBook Pro. I noticed that when scrolling through certain text documents a horizontal ripple appears across the screen about a third of the way up from the bottom. It occurs in Safari too with some web pages. It's not really that big of a deal. Most people would probably not even notice it. I'm really undecided whether I should return the computer now or maybe wait a few months and see if Apple will have a fix for it. I don't what the Apple Store's return policy is. Maybe I should return it now while I still have that opportunity.
I just wanted to add my name to the list of users experiencing this issue. As a matter of fact I am on hold with tech support regarding this problem. I will post another response to let you know their verdict.
So, after consulting with Applecare Support, their first recommendation was to do an Archive and Install. I have already done this on a separate occasion (10.5.3 update messed up my system) therefore this solution does not solve the display issue. His next tidbit of advice was to run the Apple hardware test located on the 10.5 install disk #1. I ran both the basic and extended versions of the test and came up with NO hardware issues. Next, according to Applecare, is to do a complete reinstall of OSX... I have a feeling that this problem will reoccur again eventually, even IF I do a complete reinstall of OSX, thus I have no intention of reinstalling everything back onto my system again.
Anyone else have any ideas:
Applications where problem is visible:
Mail
iChat
Safari
Firefox 3.0
Finder
iTunes (store only, large chunks of the window will flash when scrolling)
Stickies
Apps in which I cannot replicate problem:
Firefox 2.0.0.14 (scrolling only, Flash still flashes in chunks)
iTunes Library
Pages ’08
iPhoto
Dictionary

How bad is it? Are you willing to live with it? If not, just do what the Apple tech tells you to so that it absolutely rules out software issues. As someone else has pointed out, this is probably a bad video card that Apple doesn't want to admit yet.
I agree, I hear that Dell has been issuing BIOS fixes for certain laptops with the same set of cards as ours. I personally have two macbook pros for work and one has a dead LCD, but this is from a different matter and the other has the same problems listed above. I have invested over 5g's in these computers.
