Burner Firmware Update

I have been burning CD/DVD's lately with sporadic problems. I'm thinking maybe a firmware update would help. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think I've ever done this.

There is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-109 installed (Firmware revision: 1.40). Also, an external Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-105 (Firmware revision: 1.21).

Someone at work told me to be careful with this, as I could cause more problems than I already have.

Can someone steer me in the right direction on this?
