Sorry, but any such activation would require that the iPhone be hacked, and discussion of any such hacks is not allowed here.

In addition, you need to be aware, of you're not already, that you will get no support of any kind for your iPhone from Apple; not warranty repair nor software support. So again, unless you really like to go it alone, return it and get your money back.

Hello.

At this time the iPhone can be Activated and used in the following countries and with the following carriers.

USA - AT&T

UK - O2

Germany - T-Mobile

France - Orange

No other country and or carrier is supported at this time. Hope this helps you better understand this.

On the bright side. If all you are wanting is a media device that has internet support and does everything except cellphone. I would like to suggest the iPod Touch.

There is even a Web App that will work with Google Maps.

Just found this topic out of interest. I wanted to respond on the claim that it is illegal to activate outside the US - no it is not - per AT&T!!.

We are a united nations family and travel around a lot. I bought the iPhone in the US and gave it to my wife as a christmas present. Whilst we were previously based in New York, we presently live in Istanbul. I checked with AT&T and I can LEGALLY, activate it on a AT&T GoPhone plan. Wherever AT&T have roaming partners it will connect which is perfect for my wife who travels all over the world inc. US although now rarely. It doesn't work in Turkey but i guess its got to come here soon but hopefully, before we move on.

Its EXPENSIVE!! but it works and its LEGAL!. AT&T were very helpful in assisting me when i first mucked up the activation process - burning two GP numbers to the sim and account.....ooops but now are assisting me in completing the process.

See, honesty pays in the end!....and there's hope for us all yet.

Cheers.

Sorry - please clarify on the warranty issue.

I addressed this with AT&T (admittedly not Apple) and they said as far as they were aware, given i was activating with AT&T in accordance with Apple's T&C's there was no issue on warranty. Furthermore, Turkey has authorised Apple outlets who claim to validly support my Apple extended plan warranty on my Mac. Please advise if I missed some small print as regards the iPhone!
Cheers.

AT&T has nothing to say about warranty issues, and AT&T reps are in general woefully informed about such matters. Apple has said that they do not support any attempts to unlock an iPhone, and if such an attempt renders the iPhone unfunctional, as has happened to some people, Apple will consider that to be an unauthorized modification which voids the warranty.

Furthermore, Turkey has authorised Apple outlets who claim to validly support my Apple extended plan warranty on my Mac.

Irrelevant. Mac sales are not restricted by country whereas the iPhone is. Further, it doesn't require any unauthorized modifications to use a Mac outside the country in which it is sold, whereas use of an iPhone with any cell network other than the one to which it's locked (or in France, a French network) does require unauthorized modifications.

Bottom line: an iPhone will not work as sold by Apple in any cell network but those for which the iPhone is sold (see above for a list). Anyone who attempts to modify an iPhone to work with another cell network will get not support from Apple and risks voiding the iPhones warranty.

Forgive me, I think you may have missed my point. For the avoidance of doubt, under no circumstances am I trying to activate the phone with another carrier. ONLY AT&T on GoPhone roam.

I do however, take on board your point as regards the Apple warranty. Again, I am not in ANY WAY modifying the phone to use with a Turkish carrier - just AT&T on Roam in other countries where my nearest and dearest travels. It does not work here because AT&T have no roaming partner (Maybe they have) of that i am aware. Hence, the warranty should not be voidable.???

Thanks for the point on AT&T which i had already appreciated.

You warranty will still be intact. Providing, of course, that you don't drop it or throw it in a pool or something else that might void it due to abuse.

Sorry, I did indeed misunderstand. I thought you were referring to using an iPhone with a Turkish carrier. As Ansuz said, you will indeed have full warranty coverage when using a US iPhone internationally, whether through roaming or just using the other, non-phone functions. Note, though, that you may have to ship the iPhone back to the US for service should that be necessary.
