Xgrid and Linux Virtual Server

Can I use Xgrid in the same manner that I would Linux Virtual Server? ( http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/whatis.html)

I would like to set up a very reliable application server using multiple machines but have it look like a single machine with the front-end server handling all the load balancing. Do all the applications have to be Xgrid enabled or can they just "be there" and Xgrid will distribute the load?

No, Xgrid does not load balancing or distributing. The simplest version of Xgrid only takes a list of commands and sends one to each computer in the grid, and returns the results to the client.
A more sophisticated program (that you will have to code yourself) would send some stuff to the grid and collect it automatically, while presenting a simple interface to the user.

Check some of the Xgrid examples inside XCode, like Mandelbrot, for help on how to do that.
