iPhone dies with 50% charge still remaining

I charged my iPhone until full. Hadn't used it for most of the day. I used WIFI for half an hour afterwords. Then two hours later, I returned, used WIFI for 10 minutes and then iPhone shut off. Even though the Battery indicator showed 50%-60% battery still remaining. Pressing the on button simply shows the dead battery, please charge icon.
I plugged the iPhone straight in to let it charge, the charging icon instantly appears, and is still 50% - 60% full! The battery didn't appear as flat, but still over 50% full.

This is the third time its happened to me, and I think I've only charged is 4 times since having it!

I'm using the latest firmware.

Intel iMac Dual-Core 2.0 gHz, 2Gb RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.1, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are power the iPhone off/on, Reset, Restore and if no change after any/all, call AppleCare or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby to have this checked.

Happened again!

This is such a problem. I have no Apple Store near me and I bought it from Carphone Warehouse!

So again ,the problem is this..

The battery seems to be going very slowly down. After nearly 4 hours usage and 2 days standby time, the battery was at approximately 70%. However, the next time I turn it on, I go onto the Internet, with Edge for around 30 seconds and it dies. I cant turn it on and have the flat red charge icon.

HOWEVER. And this is the weird bit.

I plug it in at home. I INSTANTLY get the charge icon, and its still 70% full and showing green!

So it is only constantly charging the final 30% of the battery.

What should I do?
