Has anyone been successful in using the new Sony walkman GV-HD700 with Final Cut Pro 6? It's not on the list of approved devices, but I used the earlier incarnation of this device with earlier versions of Final Cut Pro without any problems.
Yes. I bought one back in December to give me a start on ingesting my HDV footage without having to drop a lot of money on a more expensive deck. I have not given it a deep test, but the footage I have imported has been good. Remember, there will be a delay between the player and the computer on the log and capture. That is due to the nature of HDV. So just use the player as your viewer and not the FCP capture window. Another note, make sure you have selected the proper Device Control Preset for HDV or it may not recognize the device.
I don't know how long it will last once I really start doing some heavy work on it, but that's why I got the extended warranty from BH.
Use it how? It would seem to me that for hdv, you'd want to bring the material to a drive and crunch it through streamclip into something you could edit.
I've only just looked at it on the web, but it seems for almost the same money you could get a deck that WOULD work seamlessly.
I'm not doubting you. I am just wondering which deck you are talking about that is almost the same price? I checked the BH site and I came up with the HVR-M15U for $1,799.95.
Maybe you have another one in mind.
Of course the other thing as we have learned at my work is that a price difference of $800 is like saying something cost $10 more when comparing to how much gear costs.
Well... I just googled the deck and the first number that jumped off the page was 1299. I try to stay off the B&H site unless I know EXACTLY what I'm going there for. I might buy something. Have you ever been there? It's like FAO Schwartz for video and film folks. Scary. Leave your credit cards at home!
I'm glad you were able to get FCP to find your GV-HD700 -- I've spent 2-days solid trying every combination but get nothing but non-recognitions between the two. Do you mind itemizing what you did to get them to talk? I know it's asking a lot, but I can load a tape into any of our Z1Us or even the little HVC's and FCP finds them immediately, but not the HD700. Using Firewire direct from the HD700 to iMac24 and even trying to connect on my MBP17 but no luck with either.
I use this thing all the time.. I just got it a few weeks ago and have already captured over 300 hours of footage with this.. what is it exactly thats not working? the steps I did was same as I would do my z1u
just make sure that if your going to capture dv footage you set the setting to dv on the deck and visa versa for hdv it will not recognize hdv if the setting is dv and visa versa... other than that it just works never had a prob with it.. and as you know in post we put our decks through the ringer.. I just ordered a few more for a couple of my directors
Thanks, but please give us your detailed capture settings and workflow with FCS2! Apparently for some of us it doesn't "just work". I am working with other devices too, which will register just fine. Not this one so far, despite all tweaking.
for capture settings it varies within the easy setup...
depends on what I am capturing but all I do is set it up in there...
it will either be ntsc DV or HDV 1080/60i
I have never messed with prores as you can tell by other post I have made on here...
then I go to log and capture and it works..
like I said before I had an issue once printing to tape on it.. but that was my fault..
what I have found on other message boards is this
the deck itself has an in/out setting which can either be
AUTOMATIC
HDV 1080I
DV
people are saying to not use the auto setting unless it is already set for what you need cause you may put a tape in thats dv right after you had an HDV tape in and final cut is looking for a HDV deck when you need it to look for the dv... or visa versa.. it will be set on dv through the auto setting so when you go to capture hdv it will not reconize it at all.. try that...
what steps are you using to hook it up? I am assuming the same steps as I listed above... ive been working with computers for a living now for 8 years and I have always found stuff like this strange...
works for some not for others...
I read that you had an issue on printing to tape..
I have what seems like the same set-up as you, I have the Sony GV-HD700 clamshell, I have always had it working great for import into Avid Xpress Pro 5.7 AND Final Cut Pro 6.0.1...
I CANNOT figure out how to Print to Tape. I have looked for hours in forums, etc.
I think the problem comes down to FCP. It will only allow me to select "None" "Display" or "DV NTSC" in the options menu. I need to print to tape HD.
My display on my GV-HD700 says "HD in", so it is all ready to put the footage to tape, but it won't show the footage because of the FCP settings. All the options I need to choose are gray, where you cannot select them.
My whole project settings are in HD, 1080i, etc... so I have no idea why it won't let me pick those other options?
Have you output to tape in HD?
And if you have any insight, I would much appreciate it, as I am an Avid user and I'm really trying to switch to FCP. More people use it.
I was trying to get material on hdv via the gv-hd700, i find the way after a few, look over the FCP av settings, summary tab, sequence preset, choose the apple intermed codec 1080i60, capture preset hdv-apple interm codec, device control preset HDV Firewire and play back vieo over the canvas, choose your best option for audio playback.
Video play back cant use via firewire(i dont know wy) but can work an finish it exporting with the quic time convertion or the original sequence settings. hope to be helpfull... el chintoman.
I have since used this gv-hd700 over 200 times on printing to tape... I had issues the very first time but I have since fixed the prob...
I know it may sound rude but this comes down to "operator error" with settings and what not... if you guys want to shoot me an email
chris (at) ddemedia (dot) com I will be happy to try to walk you through everything or we could even screen share I will see how you got your setting set up and you can see mine... sometimes it helps to watch it being set up vs trying to do it....
