where is the orchestra hit instrument?

Question

where is the orchestra hit instrument?

orchestra hit is a standard midi instrument
i know it exists because my other midi apps can access it
why can't i find it in gb?
does it have a different name in garageband?

MacBook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.5.1), 2.16Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb memory, 100Gb 7200rpm hdd, superdrive

GB doesn't have a standard midi set of instruments. It also doesn't access QuickTime standard midi instruments by default. If you want to have access to those, you'll have to get a little software called SoundFontSynth.

Just to get this straight - there is a set of instruments that are part of the General MIDI standard but these are only usually used by non-musicians who want to buy song backing tracks in MIDI format and use them with some sound module that has a corresponding set of instruments so that they can just load up the file (and hope for the best).

I don't think anyone who's seriously interested in making their own music really needs that do they?

you'd think if you made a peice of software capable of sequencing midi you'd use system midi, not proprietry

You can use the Quicktime General Midi instruments in GB, but you need SoundFont Synth in order to access the sound bank.
